Friends, here's the latest..

Adoptions: All of our beautiful dogs have been adopted by loving and caring families! Mardi (fmr Ringo) got 4 kids, an American mom and dad and a large property to run on.. new family absolutely crazy about him... ..Joe the black adult lab is doing just great with new owner Sue; our older pups, the terrier crosses are all showing varying degrees of anxiety, but all in new homes and owners working with them....Callie nervous but coming around; Moses has serious problems with traffic, but otherwise well; Matilda, now "Tilly" is the new queen of her house...Billie's going to need some work with behaviourist - he's pretty shell shocked from his former life... we did get some background info on these dogs from St. Francis, which we're sending to the new owners under separate cover to help them understand more of their new dogs' stories...very very sad....all black lab pups homed as well: Puppy1 "Tank" new owners think he's a blast and he's doing great; Puppy2 Oscar and Puppy3 Callie (sp?) just fine; Puppy6 named Joy doing good too...King got himself a veterinarian family (talk about your happy ever after) and finally, Francis, darling Francis, got a 5 bedroom house with a backyard of his own, three wonderful young boys to play with and an extremely loving new mom and dad, who refer to him as their little "monkey" ... (he IS a monkey - an absolute joy - I never had so much fun as having Francis here with me.. he is just hilarious. if he were a person, he'd be in show business...)

Whew! ... Sincere congratulations to Bonnie and crew at Cambridge Humane for their incredible work on these adoptions....

Welcome to all the new owner/guardians, who have joined the Cause for Paws (C4P) network! We are now formally over 1,000 media players, animal agencies, and animal advocates: Ontario, Quebec, US and some in western Cdn provinces... absolutely amazing.

Reunions: We'll be following up on Noel, the repatriated rottie, to see how she made out getting home to her family... stay tuned...

Celebration Station: is the new ARNO/Best Friends staging area in New Orleans. they have a heated facility, a kitchen, etc., volunteers are well cared for... and are still doing feed, water and trapping runs. And the dogs keep coming... apparently in Hammond dogs were vetted for free by a wonderful woman who pulled a stainless steel table and a bunch of medical supplies into a parking lot and got to work!!! New Years was celebrated in a few different ways: some people took advantage of the new nightlife in New Orleans, and just gave themselves a break and celebrated... others went into a high kill shelter and were successful in getting, are you ready? 126 dogs pulled... for free, vetted, etc. Also, new years eve, teams down there (everyone) facilitated a massive animal transport: 136 dogs moved out to/through east coast....

Possible new Canadians: Team Two was successful in getting an old spaniel from Waveland on an emerg medical pull the day they hit the ground last week; they also got to Roicy, and pulled several dogs, 2 heelers, a corgi mix, a yellow lab cross... in Hammond, apparently, an adult shepherd, 3 huskies, 2 ratbones, a couple of cattledogs... some of above dogs may be going home with team members...some going to Cambridge... situation changes every day; we'll know better by end of week.. Team back at Roicy kill shelter tomorrow, Wed, to pull more... From what I understand, we're anticipating anywhere from 10-20 dogs coming to Cambridge; volunteers may be successful in bringing home another 10-15 for private homing in Canada. That's a lot of dogs!!!!!

Team Two: at this time scheduled to arrive in Cambridge January 7th. Teams will "stagger" home (pun intended) but this is scheduled arrival date of Tiff / possibly Meg...

Thanks: Thanks to Citytv Toronto for continued coverage of story; to CKCO Kitchener (CTV) for getting King's message out... thanks to Toronto Star for covering Francis story; Globe and Mail for ongoing wide coverage; thanks to Canada AM, who might be showcasing Team Two on upcoming segment...we'll keep everyone posted. And sincere thanks to everyone again for donations.... none of this would have been possible without everyone's support!

Volunteers Needed: we need a team of drivers to take the van from Cambridge to Simcoe on Sat'dy Jan 7th - please call mitch if anyone available... 416.535.8988.

Don't forget to "hound" your local radio/tv stations and ask them to cover updates on dogs from Katrina.... the more we keep this in the media, the more awareness we raise, the more collective action we take, the more successful we'll be in raising consciousness about the emotional lives of our 4 legged friends...and the more successful of course, in spreading the message about the incredible compassion Canadians have had for our American friends...and how hundreds and hundreds of volunteers on both sides of border have saved thousands and thousands and thousands of animals...

Happy new year everyone! Massive effort, tremendous success! SO encouraging!

for the animals, m.

ARNO Needs Food & Volunteer Feeders Now (Jan 3)

**ARNO NEEDS FOOD & VOLUNTEER FEEDERS NOW** (please cross post)

1/3/05: Please help ARNO maintain a steady flow of food for animals on the streets (and their new litters)!

ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS NEEDS:

Dry Dog/Cat Food
Wet Dog/Cat Food

Celebration Station
5959 Veterans Memorial Blvd.
Metairie, LA 70003

Please send details of delivery to:

To maintain Celebration Station and ARNO¹s Feeding Program, we utilize an average:

(1,000 to 1,500 pounds of food = 1 pallet)

HELP HURRICANE ANIMAL VICTIMS SURVIVE IN THE NEW YEAR.

Clifton, Samantha and their son Justin hadn¹t seen Reagan since they fled their home to ride out Katrina at Loyola University. Four days after the storm, the Lores made the first of several trips to New Orleans in search of Reagan and two other cats. They departed with empty carriers each time.

Fortunately, food, water, and determination led to Reagan¹s reunion with her humans. An ARNO volunteer feeder identified Reagan, tracked down the Lores, and alerted an ARNO trapping team. By December¹s end, Samantha¹s mother Rebecca Dickerson greeted the wide-eyed kitty at Celebration Station. This time, a full carrier left in loving hands for the drive to Baton Rouge--where the Lores anxiously awaited Regan¹s homecoming.

ARNO¹s Food/Water Program is vital for thousands of animals left to struggle in an unstable environment. BUT THERE IS NO FOOD/WATER PROGRAM WITHOUT...FOOD!

For 4 consecutive days, there was NO FOOD for volunteers to drop. Animals rely upon these food stations. Resident feeders--some of whom lost homes, cars, and jobs to the hurricanes--borrow vehicles just to go out and feed animals. But most cannot afford to buy enough food to cover their sections.

Your food donation gives each animal a chance. Just like Reagan.

1/3/05: ARNO ALSO NEEDS VOLUNTEER FEEDERS!

For the next 6 to 8 weeks, at least 50 teams of two volunteers each are needed to distribute food/water in NOLA alone.

ARNO¹s food/water volunteers not only help sustain life‹but also participate in reunions by sighting specific animals. We rely upon these sightings to track and humanely trap animals, some of whom may be injured or living in areas slated for demolition.

RESIDENT FEEDERS:

Louisiana residents are urgently needed to commit to regular food/water drops in assigned sections of the city.

January 2, 2006

It has been a continuous challenge to keep Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) Food and Water program stocked with wet and dry, cat and dog food.

For the last 4 days we have had no food to drop for the thousands of animals who are alive today since Katrina because of our extensive food and water program and the hundreds of volunteers who have been maintaining it since early September 2005.

We need your help to keep a steady flow of food coming to New Orleans well into the New Year so these animals (and their new litters) can continue to have a chance and their suffering reduced.

Please deliver dry and wet, cat and dog food to

A new year's thought (1 Jan)

From: David Meyer <david @grappling .us>
Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 11:13:41 -0800
To: <KatrinaRescuers @1-800-Save-A-Pet .com>
Subject: A new year's thought

(David waxing philosophical here, so forgive me)...

There are no new prayers, no new hopes. They've all been expressed before. Justice, freedom, compassion for all living beings... all concepts that live or die moment to moment in our daily actions. Each day for us is either a recommitment to be the best, or a surrender to the mundane- our potential is in our own hands.

In the aftermath of Katrina there are new possibilities of growth. Talented and energetic people brought together by this tragedy who can do great good in the future. We saw the sad and suffering eyes, eyes without hope, eyes showing fear and pain. It is now in our hands to create an alchemy of suffering to triumph, pain to freedom.

In this new year, grant us honesty and clarity of intention- the very traits we so love in non-human animals. Let's know our own motivations and goals, because only through honesty to self can we see clearly our unique piece in this puzzle. Let's find our true center, the place where we thrive inside ourselves and can then extend out into the world with the best each of us has to offer. Let's not be drawn off-course by the daily theater in which personalities become nothing more than mindless actors, unaware of the reality around them. That is human politics as usual, but what the animals need and have always needed is for us be unusual, remarkable, and extraordinary.

We have a mission to make compassion and freedom the canvas on which all else is painted. It reaches beyond people, and it reaches beyond dogs and cats. Let's be the change we wish to see in the world in every action we take. Let our ego melt away where possible or be revealed for what it is. Let our only measure be the measure by which we succeed in helping others. Let obstacles become just challenges to be taken on, limits become just puzzles to be solved, and let the "impossible" become the ultimate invitation to Vision. Let each day start with "What is possible?" and end with "Was that the best I could do?", and if we have only one last breath, let it speak the truth to power for those who cannot speak it for themselves.

We did not earn our life, we were given it as a temporary, miraculous gift. Let's honor that and make good use of it.

Happy new year, and thank you for all each of you have done.
