Dear Foster Friends ~
We have recently been informed that Petfinder will be "freezing" it´s AERN (http://disaster.petfinder.com/emergency/) (Animal Emergency Response Network) data base on February 24, 2006. This will mean that only limited information will be available to the viewing public who may be still trying to find their animal(s). In order to continue to be transparent and forthcoming with these pet owners, we have provided Petfinder with all our foster group public information (general group emails addresses, listed phone numbers on websites, etc) as well as the animals that we believe are still in your care.
Petfinder has provided us with all inquiries for these specific animals and we will forward any outstanding inquiries that have not yet been ruled out by our Lost and Found Coordinators to you as soon as possible. We will also inform you of any inquiries we are still investigating. This will allow you to determine if a potential owner is still waiting to hear back about a possible match.
Once your group is listed in the AERN as the contact group for a specific animal you will have up until February 24th to go into Petfinder and update the animals´ information and status. Please see the instructions provided by Petfinder in their email below.
Thank you for your ongoing efforts to care for the rescued animal from Hurricane Katrina.

"A better world through kindness to animals"
Dear Katrina Groups,
This is an important message regarding the status of your animals posted in the Animal Emergency Response Network (AERN) on Petfinder.com. Please take time to read this entire message.
First and foremost, thank you all for the wonderful work you have been doing to help the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Over 10,000 pets went through the temporary shelter rescue system and you have played a part in over 3,200 reunions documented in the AERN database, provided to animal welfare by Petfinder.com and Maddie's Fund. 3,200 reunions are amazing when you consider the logistics of the massive response to Katrina/Rita and you should be really proud.
Several changes are going to happen over the course of the next couple of weeks and we need your assistance.
Change #1. On February 24 the found records will be "read-only" access for everyone. After this date any changes to these records will have to go through an AERN administrator at <katrina @petfinder .com>
Please make sure the status of your pets is accurate before this date. Below is a list of status definitions to use as a guide.
Change #2. Several groups have requested to have their contact information removed from the found records of animals that they have placed in permanent adoptive homes. You now have the ability to do this on any of the records of animals you have sheltered.
To do this you need to go into that animal's record and in the "contact" section you will see a new link that says "remove contact info". It is just to the right of the edit contact info link. Once you click on this link the record will be frozen and you will not be able to make any other changes to the record other than "add a note".
So, your first step should be to make sure the animal's status is correct and remove any contact information in the pet description field, as these records will still be viewable to the public. Once you have made those changes, you can click the "remove contact info" link. Remember, once you have removed your contact information you will not be able to make any other changes to that record.
When the contact information has been removed from a pet listing, we will display an automated message to let the public know that these animals were rescued from the disaster but that contact and location information is no longer being tracked. We hope that knowing it was rescued and cared for will provide some level of closure for anyone concerned about the pet.
If you are still trying to reunite pets we appreciate your efforts and you do not need to do anything to the records other than making sure they are up-to-date prior to the 24th.
If you need any changes made after February 24th, or if your current access level is "read-only", please email <katrina @petfinder .com> and indicate the animal's PF id# and what changes you need made and we will be happy to assist you.
Status List Open/Active - animals that you are still trying to reunite with owners. These will appear in the public search. Adopted - animals that have been adopted, will still appear in the public search as some groups have made conditional adoptions. If you remove your contact information from these records, they will have an automated message letting the public know that this animal was rescued from the disaster but that contact and location information is no longer available for it.
Completed - use for animals that have been reunited with their families. These animals will not appear in the public search. Not completeable - can be used for animals that have died, been euthanized or lost. These animals will not appear in the public search. Hold - for animals pending reunion or other situations you feel a hold is appropriate. These animals will not appear in the public search. Inactive - for duplicate records or erroneous records. These animals will not appear in the public search.
Thank you for all of your efforts,

NOLA Housing Projects Sweeps

Please crosspost to all who may be able to help.
We are scheduled and confirmed to be at the Lafitte Housing Projects Monday, February 20, at 8:30 AM. We will be meeting at the Housing Office at 2101 Lafitte St. There is no electric power on the grounds so everyone should be equipped with flashlights and gloves.
Absolutely no water or food inside these units... they will be boarded up permanently once we do the sweep. No traps either. These units will no longer be accessible to anyone but the person who lived there, and only with HANO security to open them up.
We are not allowed inside the units without HANO security ever. We are going in the private units to sweep only, and capture any weak or ill cats that allow us to capture them.
ARNO markings on projects are to be as follows, spray paint only on the metal that is boarding up the unit:
- 1 dot (small, about the size of a boiled egg) if we have swept that unit;
- 2 dots if an animal is swept out or caught in that unit;
- 3 dots if an animal is found inside deceased. It is up to HANO security to remove the body, unless they ask us to do it.
I will have the spray paint on site for the markings. We will be in Lafitte on Monday and Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have been requested for the St. Bernard Housing Projects and should be confirmed later today. If everything goes well on Monday, HANO will coordinate with us before boarding up any more projects, so let us be on our best behavior. I know that this may be an emotional experience but let's keep a professional manner at all times.
Thanks to all, especially Nancy Cleveland for her persistence and Charlotte Bass Lilly for not giving up.
