Please crosspost to all who may be able to help.

ARNO is scheduled and confirmed to be at the Lafitte Housing Projects Monday, February 20, at 8:30 a.m.

Volunteers will meet at the Housing Office at 2101 Lafitte St.

There is no electric power on the grounds so everyone should be equipped with flashlights and gloves.

Absolutely no water or food inside these units...they will be boarded up permanently once we do the sweep. No traps either. These units will no longer be accessible to anyone but the person who lived there, and only with HANO security to open them up.

We are not allowed inside the units without HANO security ever. We are going in the private units to sweep only, and capture any weak or ill cats that allow us to capture them.

ARNO markings on projects are to be as follows, spray paint only on the metal that is boarding up the unit:

1 dot (small, about the size of a boiled egg) if we have swept that unit;

2 dots if an animal is swept out or caught in that unit;

3 dots if an animal is found inside deceased.

It is up to HANO security to remove the body, unless they ask us to do it.

I will have the spray paint on site for the markings. We will be in Lafitte on Monday and Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have been requested for the St. Bernard Housing Projects and should be confirmed later today. If everything goes well on Monday, HANO will coordinate with us before boarding up any more projects, so let us be on our best behavior. I know that this may be an emotional experience but let's keep a professional manner at all times.

SUCCESS IN ELIMINATING FERAL CAT OVERPOPULATION

Two things will ultimately end animal overpopulation: responsible pet ownership and sterilizing homeless animals. With the latter, you don't need a majority of the population involved to achieve success - all you need is one person trapping feral cats in an area. The more people there are trapping citywide, the fewer strays there will be. We'd like to see the day when we have one person per block doing trap/neuter/return (TNR) in all areas of the city, as well as volunteers to trap large colonies. It's worth striving for because the overpopulation problem will virtually disappear when that objective becomes the standard nationwide.

Like many of our members, we hope everyone will embark on a neighborhood watch for feral cats, or to coin a phrase, Stray Watch. How do you start? First, be prepared by purchasing or borrowing a humane trap (call SpayMart for trap information). Second, when you see a stray in your area, put out food so he'll stay around, then advise SpayMart when you want to trap and book a spay/neuter appointment. (We'll work with you if you have a problem catching the cat.) Third, it's ideal and our recommendation to provide food and shelter after neutering, but the idea is to break the cycle of unwanted animals by reducing the numbers. Also, educate your neighbors: Once cats are neutered, the yowling and fighting from mating come to an end. Feral cats then keep a low profile, being active mainly at night, when they perform the valuable service of "rat patrol." Many people don't realize that without some free-roaming cats, we would be overrun with mice and rats to the point where traps and poisons would be ineffective. Once inside a dwelling, removing them can be costly and difficult. (After euthanizing the feral cats on their property, one apartment complex in Metairie asked some tenants to bring ferals back onto the property and feed them. The reason? For the first time in 20 years, mice were invading apartments!)

In a recent year, approximately 33,000 animals were euthanized in our local shelters alone, averaging out to around 90 animals daily, primarily because there weren't enough homes to go around. Most animals turned in to shelters are euthanized (4-6 million/year nationally)

Coming up this Sunday, Feb 19th, in New Orleans: the famous annual BARKUS PARADE.

It's like the big Mardi Gras Parade, except that Barkus is dogs, dogs, dogs.

Best Friends will be in the parade this year, with a collection of pooches rescued from Hurricane Katrina.

And we'll have a webcam at the parade so we can web-cast live and direct with the dogs and the people who've been rescuing them and looking after them.

The parade starts at 2 p.m. Central Time. But we're expecting to go behind the scenes at Armstrong Park at around noon and talk to lots of people and their dogs.

So check in on the Best Friends website at 1 pm Central Time, and join us at the party and then at the big parade and prize-giving.

As far as we're concerned, it's your party, too. After all, you made this amazing rescue effort possible!

The St. Bernard Animal Shelter sustained severe damage due to Hurricane Katrina. Shelter employees are now working out of a bus at the shelter grounds, 115 Agriculture Road in Chalmette.

Animal Shelter director Ceily Trog said she and her staff have rescued nearly 1,500 animals since the hurricane. Of those, Trog knows of nearly 200 that have been reunited with their original owners.

Trog said dozens of additional cases are still under investigation. Residents are welcome to visit the shelter's bus to look through the logs of rescued and missing pets. Shelter bus hours are Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon or Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m.

Rescued pets are being housed at the Best Friends Temporary Shelter, formerly known as Celebration Station, on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie. Pets stay there until they can be reunited with their owners or adopted by new owners. New owners who adopt pets do so under the stipulation that they must return the pet if the original owner is located, Trog said.

Trog encourages residents not to give up hope of finding their lost pets. She said new pictures of pets are being listed daily.

"This disaster was so overwhelming," Trog said. "If you look at the number of people lost, is there any doubt how many of our pets were lost?"

With the help of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Trog said, the shelter's kennel has been gutted. New temporary kennels are to be delivered within the next few weeks.

Trog said the ASPCA has given the shelter a $250,000 grant for the spay/neuter program and the Friends of the Animal Shelter has secured an additional $100,000 donation from the ASPCA to get the shelter up and running.

St. Bernard Parish residents displaced by the storm can receive free flea preventative from the shelter. Microchipping, a permanent identification inserted under the pet's skin that provides owner information to help return lost pets, also is being offered free at the shelter.
