This is incredible. Please read and pass on to any rescuer that may be able to take in a 'project' dog. I spent a few days in Tylertown during January, and would be happy to give anyone my take on the situation.

This is the link to apply:

Don't let tragedy strike twice for a companion animal in need! Apply for the Training-Partners program and help save a Katrina dog today.

Do you practice purely positive reinforcement training? Have you seen the difference it can make?

Are you an experienced dog handler who knows that firm direction, love, and kindness can turn a dog around?

If so, Best Friends is asking you to step up and make that difference. The future of a very good dog who just needs a break depends on it!

How You Can Help:

Click here to apply for the Best Friends Training -Partners Program today. Just fill out the brief application, and we’ll call you back to review your information.

http://network.bestfriends.org/Campaigns/TrainerApplication.aspx

Once you're approved and scheduled into the program:

  • Best Friends will pay for your travel and accommodations to our rescue center at Tylertown, MS, outside of New Orleans.
  • One of the Best Friends dog trainers will introduce you to the dogs and help you select one who suits your abilities.
  • We'll provide an initial $1,000 stipend upfront to cover transport and medical costs for your chosen canine. If costs for care exceed this initial amount, Best Friends will provide extra funding until the time of their adoption.
  • We'll stay in touch with you and showcase your challenges and success on the Best Friends website, and through other local and national channels wherever possible and appropriate.

Imagine what these dogs have been through: raised in the safe confines of family life, then losing everything and forced to roam abandoned streets for more than five months, scrounging, begging, and fighting for food. They're traumatized by disaster and hunger and not sure who to trust. We want to show that through training, patient care and compassion, there is hope for them.

We believe in these dogs, and we believe in you. Click here to apply.

Roicy pics are up. Please take a look and see if you can help anybody. The shelter will be closed Tuesday for Mardi Gras, so these animals should have until 5 PM Thursday, March 2 with PTS Friday morning for those not held over. As always, I am most worried about the larger dogs. The Saint mix is awesome, as well as the black Lab and Catahoula. There are several small and medium sized dogs and beautiful cats. Rescue can pull anytime but must be there before 3 PM. Please fax your non profit proof, adoption policy and spay/neuter policy in advance to Virginia at 337 -291 -7051 if your org has never pulled before.

FYI, the mayor, public works director, city engineers, and representatives of the police department toured the facility Thursday to discuss improvements to the building, including a repair to the AC system which should really help with air quality. The goal is building a new facility so they certainly are not going to rebuild the present one, but some small improvements should make a real difference. Virginia is also testing an "air scrubber" machine like those used in hospitals.

We will again be sweeping Lafitte Projects on Friday, February at 8:30 AM. Meet at 2101 Lafitte St. Please bring gloves, flashlights, carriers, blankets, just in case. And remember, our last sweep there netted 2 live turtles!

We hope to be at B.W. Cooper late next week, will send you details....

It is Mardi-Gras weekend down here in New Orleans. For you locals, have a safe one and let us dedicate this time to ourselves, life isn't always easy in this Post Katrina City but it is still one the greatest cities in the world. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. For you out-of-towners, think of us on Mardi Gras Day and tell everyone you see Happy Mardi Gras from New Orleans, let us dedicate it to the memory of the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, two legged and four legged.

Thank you for your support,
