No Animals Were to Leave LA at This Time

Anyone coming to get them would be turned away. I spoke to her on Sunday. People want to come but they are being told not to by those in charge. I know of a Humane Society in Chattanooga ready to take a lot of animals right now. They have the vets waiting. I have been told that Atlanta has a huge facility set up ready for animals but none are allowed to leave. Atlanta has always been a big help to Florida hurrican pets but LA seems insistant on taking care of things in their pathetic sites. They want to bring volunteers down into disgusting conditions where they can't shower or even use a toilet rather than bringing the animals out of there to a good calming clean environment with adequate help. These places are willing to provide the quarantine time, foster and shelter these pets, post their pictures, handle their vet care, but no, LA has to follow their stupid rules. I am angry because animals are dying and volunteers and animals are having to be put through needless living conditions.

We need one donated in the Puget Sound area to load up and take to the hurricane region or we need one donated in MS or LA where we could fly down and pick it up. We plan to set up an emerency mobile adoption center to take animals from the overloaded shelters in the disaster zone to outlying regions and adopt them out from stores such as Petco or Petsmart. This emergency vehicle would be set up based on our current mobile adoption program in Seattle. We would also transport pets back to Washington State to shelters and foster homes waiting to help out. Rescuers need crates,boats (inflatables needed to hold full crates on the water), people, trucks, SUVs and sticks with loops to get reluctant dogs! They need volunteers at the staging areas. Many dry areas where you can walk, just bring rubber boots! Many people are needed to get dogs off porches, etc. These are NOT the water dogs. Teams are getting those, too. These are sweet, docile, loving...one came in with pink bows still on her ears! Lots of sheps and pits, all friendly and well mannered. NEED RESCUE GROUPS to come get them. You CAN and WILL get in. See below. When leaving, take signs off of vehicle and follow route back out...cars, vans, trucks have left with dogs. Just don't tell that you are rescuing animals or they will make you take them to shelter. You were volunteering...now you're leaving. Period. ANYONE CAN GET IN TO N.O. TO HELP!!! But MUST follow these directions. This comes directly from two rescuers with BESTFRIENDS who are there - and need more rescuers and helpers. 1) Have magnetic sign printed at Kinkos (or any copy store) for both sides of your vehicle. Causeway Blvd and the bridge over Lake Ponchatrain into N.O. Be sure to stay on Causeway Blvd to go over bridge! You will be in Metarie once over the bridge. -- Stay on S. Causeway Blvd. all the way to Jefferson Hwy, 90 E. (You will cross over Veterans Blvd) -- Stay on Jeff Highway east to N.O. until it turns into S. I suggest calling the state verterinarian and letting him know this is unacceptable and while rules have there reasons there are times to break the rules. Dr. Eric White, a veterinarian from New Iberia, LA, has been traveling to St. Bernard Parish, a place completely devastated by Katrina, on his own time and dime to try to save as many animals as possible. He has been going back and forth and already brought back to New Iberia a lot of pets he already rescued. THEY ARE THOUSANDS MORE ROAMING PETS IN ST. BERNARD PARISH. Time is running short as AN ORDER TO SHOOT the animals has already been given and as the Parish will be completely CLOSED OFF shortly (within a few days) for maybe up to 6 months. No pets will be allowed out of there then. A barn in Chalmette has been made available to Dr. White where he can shelter the animals he saved, thus saving precious time, but panels are needed to build temporary fenced kennels. He has made arrangements with T & S Milling in New Iberia to get the panels he needs and will be picking them up tonight. Eric's Primary goals are as follows:
1. Save lives
2. Return to Owner
3. Get animals that cannot be returned to owners into safe foster
homes.
This week's goal will be temporary housing. At this time he is requesting
assistance in funding rescue efforts - specifically:
For Tuesday they need about $1,200 of materials for immediate needed
temp housing which will be up on Tuesday. He will be purchasing today
16" x 5" galvanized fence panels to set up temporary secure pens for
animals, water and food, and food buckets (horse style waited buckets
(about $20.00 per bucket) estimate the need is at least 48 buckets.
They will be grouping animals initially by size, sex and temperament into
holding pens. Each pen will need food and water buckets.
On Wednesday he has a group from KY coming to do rescue work. They will
be putting animals into the shelter set up on Tuesday.
For Thursday he will need: Food 400-800 pounds.
Please keep in mind limited storage available and conditions. NO CANNED
FOOD - Basic brown Round food requested and 100/200 5 gallon water
containers.
For Next week: Transportation out, also shelter out of the area for pet's
that owners can not be located.
His main goal is to connect as many owners and animals back together
since these pet owner's have lost so much.
Safely is #1 and immediate - return to owner is #2.
Sick animals will be transported out to insure health of remaining
animals on an immediate basis.
Donations can be called into his office @ 337-560-0003. Credit card
receipts will be marked Iberia Humane Society. They need to state for
Katrina Animals. Checks can be paid payable to Iberia Humane Society -
marked again with fund designation.

(Dr White DVM was in the first group into St Bernard Parish on the Friday
after the storm. On that trip they took people out, and went back in and
got more people out.) This man is a hero!

PLEASE DO NOT CALL UNLESS YOU MUST for direction if you are from out of town. They need their phones to be cleared for help for their local citizens. Bring supplies to the back of the police department. They have a decent space back there. If there is a problem, go to the front and ask for specific area in the back. Local rescue/Humane Society will pick up supplies from Biloxi Police Dept. This is the most visible place, with a working phone, and they have people answer the phone. Ha
