Important Information Re Katrina Dogs with Heartworms

Subject: IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE KATRINA DOGS

Many dogs displaced by hurricane Katrina have heartworms. I have
beenrescuing animals in Southern MS for 4 years. I have rescued exactly
two that did NOT have heartworms. All the rest tested positive.

It's important that potential adopters, vets and rescuers be aware that
it's very likely the dogs from the hurricane-stricken areas have
heartworms. The symptom is coughing/choking. People should be made
aware that there are two ways to treat heartworms. If the dog has high
antigen and is obviously in distress (severe coughing upon exertion), he
or she should be treated under a veterinarian's care. The treatment is
injections of Ivermectin under a veterinarian's care. The animal MUST BE
KENNELED during treatment and for approximately two weeks after
treatment. If the dog jumps, runs, or exerts itself in any way,
dissolving worms can break off, creating clots and the dog will die.
Guardians must take the admonition to not allow the dog to exert itself
very seriously, even if the dog is perky and wants to run around. The
good news is that all of the dogs I've had treated have survived, even
elderly animals--but they must not be allowed to run around. This is
extremely important. Also, heartworm treatment should never be done on
debilitated, stressed animals. People should wait until their animals
are well-adjusted and well-nourished before they put them through
heartworm treatment.

Under certain conditions, if the antigen level is low, and the dog is not
in imminent danger, the dog can go without treatment. The heartworms
will eventually die in about a year and a half. In the South, when this
treatment option is used, very low doses of Ivermectin are given to kill
off any new infections while waiting for the existing heartworms to die.
Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes--something which is less of a
problem in other parts of the country. Care must be taken because giving
Ivermectin to a heartworm-infected dog causes worms to die and the dying
worms can cause clots and kill the dog. But I have used this treatment
option of giving very low doses of Ivermectin to heartworm-infected dogs,
and it does work. Very low doses of Ivermectin kill the worms in the
early stages of the worms' growth; the high doses used in treatment kill
adult worms.

There can be residual heart problems after treatment. I strongly
recommend L-carnitine supplements for dogs treated for heartworms.
L-carnitine is an amino acid which is very important for dogs, and it's
critical for heart muscle. I recommend a human dose; it's not toxic. I
also highly recommend they get raw beef heart which is rich in natural
enzymes and minerals including Co-enzyme Q10. Vitamin E in the form of
tocotrienols or gamma tocopherol should also be given. These things can
be purchased at a health food store or online. But, again, raw beef
heart is number one for restoring heart health. These animals,
especially, need high-quality, good food such as real turkey, chicken,
fish, and raw beef. A person feeding cheap commercial food will spend
more in vet bills than they would have if they had bought real "people"
food and human-grade petfood such as O&M or Wysong.

I hope this information will not discourage people from adopting dogs
from the South. Terrific people are working to save homeless animals
down here, and these animals are so deserving of good homes. But it's
important for their sake that people know up front what they may be
dealing with. It would be tragic for all this work to go into rescuing
all these animals only to have them euthanized in other parts of the
country when a big vet bill looms for heartworm treatment. People need
to know that just because their new dog may be diagnosed with heartworms,
it does not mean acute treatment has to be given right away. Whether or
not the owner can choose the less costly, less invasive technique of
waiting for existing worms to die off while preventing reinfection
depends on the condition of the dog, the age and how severe the infection
is. Dogs live for years with heartworms, although the longer they go,
the more potential there is for heart damage.

Pass this around to anyone you think might be interested, and if anyone
has questions, they can contact me. I'm not a vet, and this is not meant
to replace a vet's advice, but I do have experience in this area.

Also, cats can be infected with heartworms too, and in this case, the
outcome is very sad. Cats can't be treated (it has been done
experimentally, but to my knowledge it's unavailable to the public), and
one heartworm can kill a cat. As many heartworm-infected dogs as I've
seen, I've only seen one cat with heartworms and this was in a feral cat
in a horrible area. They make Hartgard for cats, and monthly flea
killers such as Revolution that have Ivermectin-like drugs may also kill
heartworms.

Subject: Katrina Help - Louisiana Boxer Rescue is Here!

Hi All...we are trying to get the word out that Louisiana Boxer Rescue
will take any Boxers that have been rescued, displaced, etc...that have
been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We know a lot of the Pet Rescuers
and shelters down there and overloaded and we realize a lot of owners are
still looking for their pets so Louisiana Boxer Rescue will provide safe
haven for these animals for 90 days before we put them up for adoption
through our program so owners can come to us to find their missing Boxer
babies, etc...

We are already taking in Boxers for owners that have lost their homes and
need a safe place for them to go until they can relocate, rebuild, etc...

My number at work is 337-708-8031 and cell is 337-274-0530

Thank you and hugs to all that have been helping these babies affected by
Katrina,

Gonzales, LA - Urgent Plea for Volunteers

Gonzales, LA - Urgent Plea for volunteers

URGENT PLEA FROM CYNTHIA: She has just arrived at the Lamar-Dixon Expo
Center and it is far worse than she expected. You all know that she has
seen a lot this past week, but she said nothing has prepared her for
this. She is asking for volunteers.

Please, if you can help, Cynthia is literally begging for you to come to
Gonzales immediately. If you are serious about going on your own dime,
please email info@projectstarfish-dot- org, put URGENT PLEA FROM CYNTHIA
in the subject, and we will get back to you.

Tuesday, September 13, 1:35PM ET
UPDATE ON CYNTHIA AND THE LAMAR-DIXON EXPO CENTER: Cynthia is on her way
to the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA. Her contact at the
International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has gotten her a spot on his
team. IFAW is one of the major animal rescue groups on the ground in the
Gulf Region. If you have been following our site, this was the potential
big news we were talking about on Sunday.

The Lamar-Dixon Expo Center is the major staging area for animals rescued
from Hurricane Katrina and we have heard that the conditions are far from
pretty. We are told from contacts at the center that there are five barns
being used as shelters and each barn is holding 750 animals in cages.
That makes 3,750 animals total.

We will know more about the conditions later today but cannot say if
Cynthia will be allowed to take photos. In the meantime, check out this
link to get an idea of what the grounds look like (without animals)
http://www.lamardixonexpocenter.com/tour.php

Finally, we are greatly indebted to IFAW and their willingness to let us
help them. They are also our major hope for getting large numbers of
animals to New England. It probably goes without saying that we will
update you as we learn more.

ADDRESS LIST for cats at Lamar Dixon!

Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 13:13:25 -0700 (PDT)
From: catknsn <catknsn@yahoo-dot-com>
Subject: ADDRESS LIST for cats at Lamar Dixon!

Here is a list of all the cats at Lamar Dixon on 9/13/05 who have
addresses on their intake information but no owner contact information
that I could find. I am a volunteer; this is in no way official or
comprehensive.

PLEASE CHECK addresses adjacent yours. Cats may have escaped. Addresses
MAY be the exact place cat was pulled out of or refer to the yard or
general area.

If you see your cat on the list, get to Lamar Dixon ASAP and pull your
cat out. Even if your cat has to go into boarding somewhere, at least it
will be air conditioned and not full of barking dogs. We are doing the
best we can on a very short volunteer staff to care for these cats, but
we need your help. Please do not abandon your cat. If you wish to
identify and surrender, come down and do so so that a rescue may take
your cat and get it out of there.

More cats are coming in, so this list is not 100% accurate and does not
reflect 100% of the cats there now. I simply tried to do something
useful, and here it is.

Multiple cats after one address mean they were all found there.

My Lamar Dixon blog is at http://www.pretzelkitty.com/katrinablog.html

by Colombiana, 9/13/05 13:26 ET

Call all humane soc. rescue teams, anybody, to St Bernard parish is where
the most concentration of animals are, roofs, water, and only 2 boats
rescuing all time. This parish is the one inforcing military not to rescue
the animals and a shoot to kill is on (just military is not following the
"killing" part and are helping anyway they can to let in people and info on
animals and feeding them MRI's although they can not pick them up. It seems
most of rescue teams are in other areas, none but 1 here. Call everybody,
thousand of dogs at arms reach.

From: Lauren Ogburn

Dear Friends:

I have a wonderful friend who is a vet in Covington,LA. She is on the
Rescue Board of the ECSCA (*)and is our veterinary consultant. She is
also one of the nicest human beings you could ever meet.. Her
multispecialty practice was destroyed (she and her husband are veterinary
surgeons). Their dogs have been sent of to live with several different
friends. Their 70 employees for the most part have had to relocate or
find jobs elsewhere. Yet my friend and her husband have been working,
sometimes w/o electricity to save as many animals as possible..for free.
There are few places to buy supplies and things ARE desperate. Despite
all the donations to animal based charities, my friends Dr Deb and John
Mauterer have received nothing. This is a first hand report from mutual
friends who are just back from visiting (and helping out) The
communications are very limited, they are still basically cut off from
the rest of the world. The situation is far worse than portrayed in the
media. New Orleans is still closed off to many, if not all animal rescue
groups. There are animals screaming in houses that are deserted by
humans. There are small 'island's of dry ground, with 20 - 30 dogs
stranded on them, staring forlornly at boats still trying to help people.
No one is allowed in, without military escort, armed with AK47's.
Rescuers, boats and helicopters are being shot at. There are people with
NOTHING left, lined up at the clinic with only their pets. Virtually all
of them need to be hydrated with IV's at the very least. They are doing
surgeries all day long. A group vets are coming down from Ohio and Iowa
to volunteer at the clinic, and bringing much needed supplies. Deb's
house will be a staging area to distribute food, crates, whatever for
whoever needs them. Also will house the vets and techs coming in. She
still has no power, and will be feeding them Meals Ready to Eat from the
Red Cross station.

They are the ONLY emergency facility within 3 parishes/counties. Deb
went to the clinic yesterday morning, to check in before church. She
never got to leave until 11:30 at night. They are being over-run. One
of the cases was an ATF dog that had drunk some of the water, and his
abdomen swelled, and he was trying to throw up, and was really obviously
ill. The military contacted Deb's clinic, somehow (phones are working
intermittently), and Deb told them it sounded like torsion, and they
needed to get him there asap. They loaded him right up on a Black Hawk
helicopter, and flew him to the causeway nearest the clinic. Deb met
them, transported the dog to the clinic and had him on the OR table
within half an hour. They saved his life. They are hopeful this will
give them a good 'in' with the powers that be to be allowed into the
flooded areas to get those animals out. Unfortunately, Deb has some
health issues, and is on immunosuppressive drugs. She will not be
allowed herself into the area due to her own risk. But, her husband,
other vets and techs are ready and waiting. It is beyond frustrating to
want to go GET the pets, but are unable to. Many more boats are
needed.....don't know how to help on that front.

Deb and her staff are running on whatever caffeine they can get and MREs.
She has to wait in line for those. Her wonderful employees are working
without pay, and many of these are single moms, whose homes and
everything they have ever owned are GONE. They are overwhelmed and
beyond exhausted. Remember, they are victims too! Please, please HELP!
We are talking about a club member in NEED.

Hopefully they may be able to get help from the different veterinary
groups and relief organizations in the future. There may be all sorts of
funds set up, but they are destitute, and need IMMEDIATE relief....they
are virtually cut off from the world. She called me in tears. She is
not the type to beg, but she was begging. They are there on the front
lines, and the lines are like a war zone, and they are doing the club,
vets, and human race proud. Please step up and give a little, give a
lot. EVERY cent is going directly to provide emergency care for animals
that need it from the area. Those that can pay, do. But, tragically,
most people have NOTHING - no homes, no food, no possessions, except
their pet. What are they supposed to do? Tell them, "sorry, if you
can't pay, your only thing left in the world is going to die right in
front of you....?"

This is not a situation where they can relocate, find another place to
work, and life will go on. They are there NOW, and plan on staying as
long as they are needed. Checks can be sent to me,
     Lauren Ogburn/Mauterer Relief Fund
     860 Fruit Cove Road
     Jacksonville FL 32259
     OR send money via paypal to
     Lauren Ogburn at sunbay@comcast-dot-net.
     Put Mauterer Relief Fund in the notes section.
Your money will go DIRECTLY to help animals NOW..no administrators are
getting any of this. If you can give any amount at all, it will help.
If you are "tapped out", as many of us are, please send your PRAYERS.
Those work too.

Lauren (Ogburn)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again, I can personally vouch for these people. It does not surprise me
that Deb and John are doing this. The could be staying with friends out
of state with at least some of their dogs. They could be looking for new
jobs. But they are not the kind of people that would walk away in a time
of crisis
Please crosspost.
- Get food, supplies, vets to Biloxi using Biloxi Police Department as a
drop off location.
- Get money to Humane Society in Mississippi to repair/find another place
temporary to take care dogs from Gulfport and Biloxi (19.4 miles from
Gulfport to Biloxi Police Department). Many dogs were drowned. Most
employees lost their homes.
- One truck load of supplies has been on route from TX to Louisiane to
another group that Madeline Seymour has forwarded to me. The local aussie
group will be a distributed point for many small animal rescue groups in
the area.
- I am arranging several other truck loads to the above group also.
- Secure more boats for the group that other have forwarded to me this
AM.  ASPCA , Best Friends, and others are working on that. They will let
me know as soon as things are in place. Once the above tasks are handled.
I will take one others, but if I spread out too much, none of them can
happens.  As you can tell, I have an overflown plate.
