Desperate 911 Plea for Help from Humane Society in Gulfport & Biloxi, MS

Desperate 911 Plea for Help from Humane Society in Gulfport & Biloxi, MS
  • Desperate 911 Plea for Help from Gulfport & Biloxi, Mississippi
  • HSSM would be able to house 300 animals within just a few days, once they have all the things from the list. They have their computer guy on standby and he can jump in and get them networked and ready for business.
  • Please forward their plea to others, and be a self-distribution point to get donation for the following items on their list.
  • 1) Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) http://hssm.org/about/ in Gulfport, MI has asked for help from our rescue group in Southern California, Villalobos Rescue Center www.vrcpitbull.com. One of their members, Cinnimon Clark, was trained at our shelter 3-month ago. Cinnimon is now in Biloxi.
  • 2) They have had the capacity to shelter 300 dogs from Gulfport and Biloxi (approximately 20 miles from each other) before Katrina, but they cannot take in any dog now. The damage was bad. Most of their dogs were drowned. Some employees lost their homes, and they are as homeless and those dogs running loose in Gulfport and Biloxi.
  • HSSM would be able to house animals within just a few days, once they have all the things from the list. They have their computer guy on standby and he can jump in and get them networked and ready for business.
  • 3) We need to get the shelter up and running ASAP, so strayed dogs can be shelter here; instead of being transported to somewhere and costs more money. They need a lot of stuffs, but we need to prioritize to have hardware supplies first. Supplies for animals cannot be stored anywhere till we get the hardware in first.
  • 4) They need a minimum of $50,000. Pay pal is being set up. Will check to find out when it is available for use. www.hsosm.org will be the secured site where credit cards can be used for donations.
  • 5) Need the following hardware (either you get some companies donate and ship the items to them directly, or you can buy them through a local Home Depot near them and ask Home Depot to deliver to them. Other items may not be bought at Home Depot).
The closest Home Depot is:
15220 Creosote Road, Gulfport, MS 39503
228-867-9925
and HSSM address is:
13756 Washington Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39503
  • To avoid all of you buy the same identical items, please check with me first. You can buy Home Depot gift cards and send them those.

URGENT Hurricane victim cats at risk - need rescue from Gonzalez

On Behalf Of Linda Mercer/Purebred Cat Breed Rescue
Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2005 1:15 PM
Subject: URGENT Hurricane victim cats at risk - need rescue from Gonzalez

PERMISSION TO CROSS POST

The the LA SPCA in Gonzalez has asked me to
organize a rescue for 79 domestic cats from a
flooded hoarder situation where the cats were
relinquished to them yesterday. They will hold
the cats for 10 days but need the cats out of
there ASAP. We do have some options for transport
and can probably arrange more if needed. The cats
will be vaccinated for rabies and FIV/FELV tested
prior to transport. Those who are acutely ill may
be vaccinated for FVRCP prior to transport. As
far as they can tell, all are already s/n.

All of the cats are dehydrated and are being
hydrated today, many of them have URI, about 6 of
them are known to be over 12 years of age, and
there are two FIV positive cats.

I am asking any established rescue group with
fosters and space who would be willing to take a
number of these cats at once please contact me
ASAP. While I can arrange special transport for
the FIV cats and known older cats to a rescue
willing to take those cats, I hope that other
rescues can each take a larger number or organize
several rescues in one area to take a larger
number as the logistics of transport will be
daunting otherwise, but I'll do what I can to
arrange transport after I see the responses to this email.

While I am the Rescue Coordinator and President
of Purebred Cat Breed Rescue, NONE of these
animals appears to be purebred, and I am
attempting to organize this solely as a service
to help these at-risk cats and LA SPCA. Please do
not feel at all pressured to respond if you have
cats in your own area at risk who you would need
to turn away should you help these cats.

I am sure the rescues who offer to help will make
sure that any fosters they use will have adequate
quarantine areas set up for these cats to protect
any other cats in their care. I do know that many
people are volunteering to foster hurricane
animals, and I can point you to online groups who
have lists of foster volunteers that your rescue
could potentially screen and then
supervise/monitor, but that will be the
responsibility of your individual rescue.

If you are a official representative of an
established rescue group that can offer to take a
number of these cats, especially if you have not
previously worked with us on other hoarder
situations, please respond to this email
PRIVATELY and provide this information:

Getting Back Into New Orleans

Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 22:31:16 -0000
Subject: Getting Back Into New Orleans

People are getting into NO RIGHT NOW - don't wait; try - the animals
may not have a couple more days. Below is some information which may
be of use:

If your pet has been rescued, all you stand to lose is some time and
gas money. The animal rescue organizations are doing all that they
can (and then some) but there are so many pets that they can't do it
all.

This website has ideas on how to get past the checkpoints, etc. If
you're turned away at one place, keep trying.
http://forums.petfinder-network.com/viewtopic.php?t=74812

Also, if you find your pet has been rescued, you should just try going
directly to the various shelters. There's a big shelter in Gonzales
LA (most pets aren't yet in the data base - they're too busy still
rescuing) and one at Parker Coliseum at LSU (www.vetmed.lsu.edu - call
first as most of their pets are pets evacuees dropped off, rather than
rescued pets, at least as far as I understand). There are multiple
other organizations as well.

Did your pet have any identification, rabies tag, etc. on it? That
would help (if you knew the rabies tag number).

Lamar Dixon Expo Center 9039 St. Landry Road
Gonzales, LA (Baton Rouge area)

www.vetmed.lsu.edu has some information as well. Map showing where
Parker Coliseum is on the LSU campus is at this link:

they can be. PLEASE go to help!!!! YOU WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING IN YOUR
LIFE THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT!

CORRECTION TO POSTING ON NC SHELTERS

Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 22:05:54 -0000
From: "leviwyandotte" <leviwyandotte@yahoo-dot-com>
Subject: CORRECTION TO POSTING ON NC SHELTERS

I am the Director of College Relations at the North Carolina State
University College of Veterinary Medicine and I'm pleased to reassue
the readers of this group that the posting concerning shelter animals
being destoyed to make room for Hurricane Katrina animals is in error.

I checked with the director of the College's Animal Welfare, Ethics,
and Public Service Program who is coordinating the CVM response to
the needs of Hurricane Katrina companion animals and was informed
that this information was mistaken. We also double checked with the
director of the area animal shelters and can state that there was and
and will be no plans as outlined in the misinformed posting.

A team from the NC State CVM has been in Baton Rouge for the past
week assisting colleagues at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine.
At this point there are no plans to bring large numbers of animals
from the Gulf Coast Region to the CVM. If this does change, I am
told that the additional animals could and would be accommodated
without disruption to current shelter animals.

Thank you to the reader who brought this mistake to our attention.
Unfortunately in times of upheaval there is opportunity for
misinformation.

Please spread the word.

Animals at Lamar Dixon will not go on pet finders until they have been
sent to another kennel. Lamar Dixon is just a temporary place for
pets to go.

If you are searching for your pet and you are able, please go to Lamar
Dixon to find them before they go to another shelter.

Zogby is polling in regard to Katrina pet-issues

Subject: Zogby is polling in regard to Katrina pet-issues

It would appear that the issues surrounding "pets in large-scale
emergencies" are getting some notice -- by who, or for what, we can't
be sure, but ... I am someone who gets "on line polls" from Zogby
every few weeks or so. I got one today, and it included the
following survey points:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some estimates are that as many as 50,000 pets have been stranded by
Hurricane Katrina. Do you agree or disagree that official rescue
efforts for any disaster - flooding, earthquakes, storms, fire, etc. -
 should include rescuing pets?

 Agree
 Disagree
 Not sure

---------------------------------------------------------

Current FEMA and Red Cross rescue policy excludes allowing the rescue
of pets? Do you agree or disagree with this policy?

 Agree
 Disagree
 Not sure

-----------------------------------------------------------

Reports are that pets, left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, are on
the verge of starvation and dehydration. Who do you think should be
most responsible for getting food and water to these pets or getting
them to shelter?

Government disaster relief agencies, like FEMA
Private relief agencies, like the Red Cross
Animal welfare or animal rights groups like the Humane Society
 Individual pet owners
A combination of all of them
 Not sure

-----------------------------------------------------

There are some reports that animal rescue groups were not allowed
into the flooded areas to begin rescuing animals until much of the
rescuing of people was complete. Do you agree or disagree that animal
rescue efforts by these groups should be allowed to take place at the
same time rescue efforts for people by the Red Cross and others are
taking place?

 Agree
 Disagree
 Not sure

-------------------------------------------------------

As many as 10,000 people in New Orleans may have refused evacuation
because they stayed behind to care for pets and other animals. How
likely would you be to refuse to evacuate an area before a disaster
struck because you were not able to take your pets with you?

 Very likely
 Somewhat likely
 Not very likely
 Not at all likely

How likely would you be to refuse to be rescued after the disaster
has struck because rescuers refused to allow you to take your pets
with you?

Pasado asks for kitten cages

Subject: Pasado asks for kitten cages

Pasado is starting to be able to rescue cats because the cats are so
weak after 2 weeks that they come to them.

Thursday, 9/15

Pasasdo rescue in New Orleans desperately needs people to buy cages for
the kittens they are rescuing from the flood zone.

Click on their link below. You will find a link to the supply house
that sells the cages they need, and you can click and contribute a cage
or part of one.

The situation there is very very bad. They are finding many dead
animals now, and the living ones are walking skeletons.

PARISH SHERIFF STOPS RESCUERS FROM SHELTER - ARMED GUARDS OUTSIDE WON'T
LET US IN Thank you for your concern about the animal recovery and
shelter efforts in south Louisiana. Please read the article below (The
Advocate, Baton Rouges newspaper) about the rumors running rampant on
the internet.Evacuated animals not being euthanized

Owners of pets brought from New Orleans sought

By PATRICK COURREGES LAFAYETTE -- The one thing flowing out of
southeast Louisiana faster than people and animals is rumor.Virginia Lee,
with Lafayette's Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center, said the main rumor
she and her staff have had to fight is that shelters are wantonly
euthanizing animals evacuated from New Orleans and surrounding parishes.
She said her staffers have been deluged with calls not just asking them
if rescued animals are being put down, but begging them to stop doing
it."Oh my God, it's unreal," Lee said of the number of calls. For the
record, neither Lafayette's animal shelter -- which is only housing a few
rescued animals -- nor the Blackham Coliseum shelter set up for pets of
human evacuees housed at the Cajundome is destroying animals, Lee said.
She said that animals that come into Lafayette as hurricane evacuees will
be found homes."It's a panic, and it's an understandable panic," Lee
said, but the euthanizing rumor is untrue. That also goes for other
shelters in the state, said Larry Hawkins, a spokesman for the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's animal rescue effort in Louisiana.Several
agencies, including the USDA, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine,
various state chapters of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals and smaller animal help organizations are working together under
the umbrella of the U.S. Humane Society, he said. The only animals
destroyed are those that are beyond medical help or are too aggressive
and dangerous to capture, Hawkins said.He also said that another false
rumor circulating is that animals rescued from the hurricane will be
under some type of quarantine.Hawkins said animals that are obviously
strays can be adopted and taken out of the area or the state, and many
have been. One problem the coordinated animal rescue effort -- which has
the double goal of saving animals and reuniting them with their owners --
is that some animals who do have owners are being taken out of the area
as strays, he said."We've
got some rogue rescuers working out there who are not part of the
coordinated effort," Hawkins said. Those people, while their hearts are
likely in the right place, aren't making an effort to reunite pets with
their owners, he said.Organizations working within the centralized effort
are providing veterinary care, food and water, as well as trying to
identify owners, Hawkins said.He also said the primary animal evacuee
collection site in Gonzales' Lamar-Dixon Expo Center is still accepting
rescued animals, contrary to another rampant rumor. The center had been
ordered to stop taking animals briefly this past weekend, but the
sanitation and animal control issues that caused that order have been solved,
he said."Everybody kissed and made up and we're back in business,"
Hawkins said.He said that the center still has problems with space, but some
animals are being taken by owners or adopted -- making space for new
animal evacuees -- and more space is being sought in the area.Hawkins
said
the organizers of the animal rescue effort are also asking people to
hold off on shipping dog food."They're about to bury us in dog food,"
Hawkins said.Figuring out what to do with all the food coming in is
pulling animal rescuers away from care of pets to sort out the food, he
said.A better way for people to help for now would be to make donations to
the animal rescue organization of their choice, he said. The LSU
veterinary school's Web site at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu is the primary
clearing house for information on animal rescue and aid, Hawkins
said.Another drain on the rescue effort is people arriving to help without clear
plans on where they'll be sleeping or how they'll be eating, Hawkins
said."When they do that, they become a liability," he said.Hawkins said
the animal rescue organizers welcome the help, but need would-be helpers
to be self-sufficient and to work through the coordinated effort."If
they want to get coordinated, they need to go to Lamar-Dixon and get in
contact with the Humane Society, they'll check them (volunteers) over
and give them IDs," Hawkins said. Those IDs will allow volunteers to get
into the affected areas to help with animal rescues, he said."At that
point, we can make the best use of whatever their capabilities are,"
Hawkins said. You can link to this article at

Help Alley Cat Allies Set-up Camp in the Gulf

Alley Cat Allies is now mobilizing to help FERAL and
STRAY CATS in hurricane stricken areas!

Feral and stray cats have not yet been addressed on a
large scale in this rescue effort. With citizens
returning to New Orleans and the surrounding areas,
Alley Cat Allies feels it is now time to act to help
the caregivers and cats start rebuilding their lives.

Alley Cat Allies plans to help rebuild the caregiver
network, remove any feral cats from shelters, collect
and provide food and water to known colonies, identify
other colonies in need of help and assess future needs
such as spay/neuter services and ongoing support for
caregivers.

Alley Cat Allies needs your help!

Mobilization will happen in the next week and we are
looking for the following:

1. A base of operations house, warehouse, campsite,
etc. within an
hour to an hour and a half drive of New Orleans
     a) We need the contact information for the
property owners, exact location
and facilities available on this property
(water, plumbing, electricity)

help for these animals. We cannot do it alone!

We're managing to get cats now, because they're so weak. It was harder
in the beginning when they were stronger. Now, after weeks of no water or
food, they come to us. We need the cages we mentioned above for kittens,
born during the hurricane, and for their mothers.

The water is receding. PasadoRescuers have been working for days in
sewage. They are tireless though. We have never known such heroes.

Donated air miles: we need to stay in New Orleans for at least two
months and constantly bring in fresh team members. Can you donate a
flight to help save lives? E-mail here.

Write a thank you note! We need everyone to take five minutes and write
a note to our hosts in LA, Louis & Linda St. Martin. They have opened
their home and farm to our 150 volunteers and all of the rescued animals.
We've overflowed their septic and trampled their grounds, and they're
still pleased to have us! Write a note to them AND another to our
rescuers - tell Pasado Rescuers to keep up the great work, that you've
been watching the website on their accomplishments, and to not give up!
They'd LOVE to read a note from you! Send both notes to the address

Relocation Coordinator

Midland/Odessa (West TX area)
In the Midland Reporter-Telegram newspaper today, there was a short
article that Raven's New Found Friends Animal Shelter(located in
Odessa, TX)is being asked by the Louisiana Human Society to act as a
Texas relocation coordinator for Katrina animals. Also mentioned in
article, that as part of the Texans for Katrina's Critters campaign,
shelters across the state of TX will be called to determine if and how
many animals each shelter can take and help make arrangements for
transportation from Tylertown, MS.

For more information contact Raven's New Found Friends at 432-561-5412.

If anyone has more information on the Texans for Katrina's Critters
campaign, please post.

The Neuteral Ground, Sep 11 - Sep 15, 2005

The Neuteral Ground is a weekly animal welfare news
summary from Spay/Louisiana. Did we miss your news? Let
us know! neuteralground@...

------- IN THIS ISSUE ----------------------------------

This special edition of the Neuteral Ground is focused
on the post-Katrina animal recovery efforts. Spay/neuter
news will return in future editions, once the recovery effort
is complete.

One Louisiana newspaper observed today that "The one
thing flowing out of southeast Louisiana faster than
people and animals is rumor." This is certainly true,
but there are also a few obvious facts as well: Animal
advocates from around the country have turned out in
full force on behalf of Louisiana's animals, and in
large part are working shoulder-to-shoulder in an
impressive cooperative effort. Not everything is working
smoothly, but many things are, and it will only get
better as we all settle in to the task at hand. The
southeast Louisiana animal welfare community has a long,
long road ahead of us, but we're not alone, and we'll
make it.

SHEILA & RENATE CALLED ME FROM NASHVILLE JUST NOW!

Hi All:

Sheila and Renate who left day before yesterday for LA with Garo,
called again, and this time I had my written questions and this is
what I got:

(1) They stopped in Nashville because Garo's car broke down (problem
with muffler). They are having it fixed and intend to continue on
despite the below...

(2) What Sheila told me in my previous msg, and this msg, refers to
the GONZALEZ area.

(3) The Veterinary Board (or some other authority) is NOT allowing
any animals to leave BECAUSE they say, they want them to be reunited
with their own families first.

(4) The other volunteers (one by the name of Sally) are coming back
because they aren't allowed in, and told the Garo group the situation
is more than horrendous, that animals are dying in their cages from
heat and other causes inside an expo building, that their cages are
placed 3 one on top of another with excrements showering on the cages
below, that they had vans filled with animals and were not allowed to
leave, etc.

(5) The Garo group had reserved 2 trucks, but no longer have them
and said we should contact Gonzalez authorities and ALL the media.

I myself say we SHOULD write ALL of those Gonzalez "authorities" AND
ALL the media to question and demand of them to free those animals to
the volunteers who are there at a great personal sacrifice for the
animals!

Perhaps we should publicly accuse them of choosing to cause the
animals to suffer and die suffering instead of being taken to a
shelter away from all that cursed inferno to which
these "authorities" are condemning the animals, for care, and only
THEN to try to reunite them with their familties. If their families
REALLY love their animals, they will choose to have them go with the
volunteers rather than stay in that cesspool created by those
CREEPY "AUTHORITIES". I think by now we don't have to have
delicacies with those f......moronic "authorities".

ATTENTION!!!!!

Just this minute I got a call from Sheila Mahon, who left for LA with
Garo yesterday eve. They got as far as Nashville and were told that
the powers that be, whoever they are, ordered that no animals are
allowed out of LA. She said they'd rather have them die in their
cages than reunite with their guardians!!!!

Said she'll call again if she can use the cell phone.

9/15 LA-SPCA update

 From: Patty
 Sent: Saturday, September 17, 2005 1:10 AM
 Subject: the 9/15 la-spca update

Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue Update (as of 9/15/05)

a.. The Louisiana SPCA, and cooperating groups, have rescued over 3,000 companion animals, including 400 equine, since we began our rescue mission two weeks ago. More animals are arriving daily.

b.. The animals we have rescued are being housed at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA (exit 177 off I-10). The French Quarter carriage mules are also on-site. Many were rescued from chest deep water

c.. Upon intake at Lamar-Dixon, animals are vetted, bathed, fed and housed. Well-respected groups from around the country, approximately 30 different organizations, are working with us to rescue, house and care for the animals.

d.. The animals will remain at the shelter until Oct 15 to give owners an opportunity to claim their pets. On Oct 16, if the animal is unclaimed, it will go up for adoption.

e.. Photos of each animal are being uploaded onto disaster.petfinder.com in hopes that its owner will find them. Oprah Winfrey will be placing ads, at her expense, in newspapers across the country telling New Orleanians where to look.

f.. Louisiana SPCA rescue teams are also working a humanitarian mission, setting-up feeding stations at 400 various points in the City.

g.. A temporary intake facility will be set-up in the Greater New Orleans area within the next few days. This temporary shelter will allow the Louisiana SPCA to care for 1000-1500 companion animals each day, prior to transfer to authorized host agencies. Host agencies will be focused on reuniting pets with their families prior to adoption.

NOTE: Several well-meaning organizations have rescued many animals, but did not process them through the Louisiana SPCA or Lamar-Dixon. The Louisiana SPCA has no record of those animals. Please encourage all humane organizations in your area that have returned with Katrina animal victims to register their charges with disaster.petfinder.org. This will give the owners a chance to find their pet BEFORE any adoptions take place. The primary goal should be reuniting not adopting. Again, please encourage all organizations to seek reuniting BEFORE adoption. Have all Katrina animal victims registered at disaster.petfinder.org
