HSUS response to Laura's statements about MS operations 22:53

HSUS response to false statements about Mississippi operations

(See Laura's statement here (http://tinyurl.com/8tm7c))

September 28, 2005

Regarding the statement of "Laura," a volunteer rescuer, about the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Hurricane Katrina rescue site, between 9/13/05 and 9/17/05.

Rumors and malevolent charges are an unfortunate feature of disaster and crisis work, and during Hurricane Katrina The HSUS has been the subject of several spiteful attacks. There is no substance to this malicious account concerning the operations of The HSUS in Mississippi. The anonymous author's false claims flow from her anger at The HSUS's refusal to let her break the rules set by the state of Mississippi, by taking animals of her choosing out of the Hattiesburg facility.

The animals in The HSUS's care at Hattiesburg are not up for adoption. They are lost and we hope to find their owners. There is a state-mandated hold on lost animals while we attempt to do so. Letting individuals take animals to other states and give them to other people frustrates that goal, places animals in potential jeopardy, and puts The HSUS and all those involved in violation of state law, putting rescue and relief operations in Mississippi at risk.

Apparently the person who wrote this attack on The HSUS feels that those volunteers who come in to help the animal victims of Katrina have a right to take animals away with them as a kind of emotional reward for their work, without giving the rightful owners of these displaced pets a chance to reunite with them.

The unusual circumstances of Katrina have attracted many people with strong opinions about the abandonment of animals in a disaster. Many hold the belief that owners don't have a right to get their pets back because they left them behind. However, the record is clear that hundreds of residents became separated from their pets through no fault of their own, or under extreme duress. Apart from what the state of Mississippi requires of us, we have our own conviction about what is appropriate. If people want to reunite with animals they have lived with, we are not making judgments.

The management of a temporary animal shelter along with a rescue and relief operation during a disaster is a challenging responsibility. However, it is a burden that The HSUS has effectively assumed on many prior occasions, and that is one of the reasons that the state of Mississippi permitted us to operate a sheltering facility at the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg.

Our onsite staff, consultants, and veterinarians, and other longtime sheltering experts have been overseeing animal care at Hattiesburg, and their work is supervised by the state veterinarian of Mississippi. While the situation could never be ideal, the notion that staff or volunteers onsite are withholding proper care, food, and comforts from the animals in Hattiesburg is patently absurd and downright offensive -- not simply to The HSUS but to the hundreds of volunteers who have helped to care for these creatures.

Given the number of animals at the facility, the amount of work necessary for the sheltering component, and the limited number of staff and volunteers, it is utterly unfair to say that anyone "did not care if the dogs were walked only once per day." I haven't heard of a single person in Hattiesburg -- HSUS staff member or not -- who didn't wish that every single animal was out of crates completely.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the HSUS operations at Hattiesburg, and Gonzales, Louisiana, and we would not have been able to accomplish our relief work without them. But The HSUS cannot allow volunteers to make decisions about which animals should stay and which should go, when and where they should go, or how they should go. Nor can we let them substitute their conceptions of what sheltering should look like in a disaster scenario for the established procedures and professional judgment that have worked well during prior incidents.

There are many people in the disaster zones who, having lost everything, are frantically searching for their animals. Already, there have been dozens of reunions at Hattiesburg. There will soon come a time when the holding period for the animals displaced by the hurricane will be over. Then The HSUS and other organizations will do their utmost to find homes for these traumatized creatures. But until that point, we will operate under the assumption that these animals have both homes and families that are searching for them, and from the conviction that Katrina's human victims -- who have already lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones -- should not also lose their pets.

Our mission in the disaster zone is trifold: First, to save as many lives as possible. Second, to help put those lives back together by reuniting people with their pets. And thirdly, to try and find homes for the animals who've truly been made homeless by this disaster. We will continue to pursue those missions -- in that order -- as long as we are working there.

You can get a live person to talk to at the mayor's office in NO to tell them to let rescues continue.. the man we spoke with claimed to know nothing of the sort about any animal rescue being disallowed.

Gonzales Update 17:24

  From: mailto:javarnes@earthlink-dot-net
  Subject: Gonzales

My husband and son are both in Gonzales working search and rescue through HSUS. Yesterday they rescued 2 cats in the area they were searching :-) One was found in an attic and the other outside a house.

Today they went out to another assigned neighborhood and found nothing alive :-( Many cats found dead in the homes. BUT the thing that upset them the most was the fact that they found many, many houses in their assigned neighborhood today already marked as checked by other organizations sometime last week.... checked by some SPCA's or Humane Societies. Their whole day was used up checking houses on the list given them today for a neighborhood that was apparantly already searched last week :-(

The thing is .... the houses in that neighborhood that they found dead cats today.... were not checked last week by the other agencies  :-( Same neighborhood just selective houses on some organizations list checked last week and selective houses checked today from HSUS list. They are happy that any animals that were alive there last week in houses checked got out last week but what if those dead cats in houses checked today were alive last week when the other org swept the neighborhood? They did make food and water drops in the neighborhood today so that is at least some good accomplished.

New Iberia & Abbeville shelters near Lafayette 16:49

New Iberia & Abbeville shelters near Lafayette

Please get this message out to every and anyone you know who might be able to help. The emergency shelters here, in New Iberia and Abbeville, LA (near Lafayette) are filling up fast, due to Hurricane Rita. We have got to get these animals (I'm speaking specifically of dogs and cats) out of here to fosters, etc. Their fate is not good if they stay, and then there's the problem of what to do with the many more coming in. The Iberia Humane Society is a kill shelter, and today they announced that they are full. Not good.

Please do what you can to get this out to as many people and rescues you can think of. All animals leaving have been/will have been vetted, microchipped, and logged into the system for tacking for their owners, so they will have to be held as fosters for at least 30 days. Then they can be put up for adoption.

Thank you, from my heart.

NBC NEWS "TODAY" HELPS NOAH'S WISH MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR RESCUED DOGS IN SLIDELL, LOUISIANA

Cape May Box Company and NBC Viewers to Donate Dog Houses as Part of Unprecedented NBC News Effort to Help Rebuild Gulf Coast

(New York, NY) September 21, 2005 - Dogs left homeless by Hurricane Katrina will be wagging their tails in gratitude to NBC News and the Cape May Box Company when dog houses are built as part of an unprecedented effort by NBC News "Today," Habitat for Humanity International, and Warner Music Group to help rebuild the Gulf Coast one nail at a time.

Beginning Monday, September 26, Rockefeller Plaza will become "Humanity Plaza" for five days as volunteers literally construct homes around-the-clock for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. In addition, because NBC recognizes that thousands of animals were also victims of Katrina, The Today Show will highlight the generosity of the Cape May Box Company which has donated eight pre-fabricated dog houses to Noah's Wish to be assembled by children, celebrities, and NBC executives. Animal lovers can contribute additional Cape May Box Company dog houses at wholesale cost with a donation to Noah's Wish at: http://noahswish.org/doghouse.htm

Noah's Wish arrived in Slidell, Louisiana immediately after Katrina devastated the city and has been working tirelessly with Slidell Animal Control to rescue and shelter pets left behind. Over 700 animals are being cared for at the Noah's Wish temporary shelter. The donated dog houses will be distributed by Noah's Wish and Animal Control to residents who are able to return to their homes and also will be provided to dogs who are adopted into loving new homes.

"We are delighted that NBC News has selected Noah's Wish to participate in this event and to help raise awareness of our efforts to rescue and shelter animals affected by Katrina," said Terri Crisp, Founder & Director of Noah's Wish. "On behalf of the hundreds of dogs in our shelter who will benefit from the generosity and kindness of Cape May Box Company, we say thank you!"

Noah's Wish hopes to reunite all pets with their owners. If that is not possible, pets will be placed into long-term foster care until loving, new homes are found. Every house that is donated will go directly to a family who was affected by this disaster.

The Habitat for Humanity Homes and the Cape May Box Company pre-fabricated Dog Houses will be assembled by thousands of citizens - including current Habitat for Humanity employees and volunteers, employees of NBC Universal and Warner Music Group, and visitors to the Plaza throughout the week. Celebrities and musicians from NBC Universal and Warner's vast rosters will join the efforts by raising hammers, and even some microphones with special performances throughout the week of the 26th, including a kickoff concert on that Monday.

Humanity Plaza, while serving as a construction zone, will also serve as a destination for viewers and visitors to get involved and learn about ways to help the victims of Katrina. If you want to help "Make a Difference Today" for dogs affected by Katrina, please make a donation to purchase a Cape May Box Company Dog House at: http://noahswish.org/doghouse.htm For every donated dog house to Noah's Wish, Cape May Box Company will include a free Dog Deck and Dog Door.

Noah's Wish is a 501 c3 not for profit organization based in Sacramento, California. Photos of Noah's Wish rescue operation in Slidell, LA are available at: http://media.primezone.com/noahswish/

URGENT TO ALL NOLA RESIDENTS LOOKING FOR PETS

Residents are now going to Lamar Dixon Horse Expo center in Gonzales LA as volunteers-turns out many have been doing so within the last few days! Please get the word out to all NOLA residents who were told that they cannot go to their residence or were unable to get into their parish or neighborhood: If they have a Pet/Pets still left in their houses- MAJORITY HAVE NOT BEEN RESCUED! Even if you call the 800#'s and filled out all the numerous online forms such as those of PetFinder- This is due to the fact that for 4 weeks there were not enough people and resources within all the major and smaller rescue groups to rescued the thousands of pets that were called in to these #'s requesting a rescue.- Some were rescued but NOT THE VAST MAJORITY!-

All residents need to do the following right now: Go directly to the Lamar Dixon Horse Expo Center- be there for the 5:30AM meeting >Find JANE GARRISON>Tell Jane you have come to volunteer and want to rescue your own or your neighbors pets> You will need ID and all proper documents and pictures and desciptions of your pets proving you are a resident AND owner of your pets-they will not just let regular jokesters come there who get the idea from this post that they can get in and steal dogs such as pit bulls for fighting -everyone will be quickly but carefully screened for this reason! Jane will provide the necessary passes and will put you out in the field same day at which point you can not only help get your own pet but try to help other pets on the streets if it is within your ability to do so-

NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE FOR ALL OF THIS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM WHY THERE ARE 100,000 pets still fending for themselves after 4 weeks-so anyway you can help will be very much appreciated by our 4-legged friends and their owners who are physically unable to go there. Please this is URGENT and has been urgent for the last 4 weeks but animals are now hanging by their last shred of hope and instinct to survive. DO NOT ASSUME your pet has perished until you see it with your own eyes. DO ASSUME your pet may still be alive and slowly suffering and GO GET THEM! We all know this is very difficult but please be proactive and this very critical moment! DO NOT ASSUME your pet has been rescued and DO NOT ASSUME your pet has probably passed away!

Our group is The Society For Animal Stewardship, formed in Louisiana just 3-4 weeks prior to Katrina.

It doesn't take long, driving through New Orleans, to come upon animals in the streets and under houses that have not been fed for days. Is HSUS or anyone still sustaining the locations that were fed days ago? Is Lamar-Dixon closing because there are not many more animals as intakes?

Teams from HSUS and LA SPCA are still going out there but they have been cut back due to Lamar Dixon closing soon AND mostly what they are experiencing now is packs of dogs that really can't be rescued. Sheduled shut down is Oct 15th and the word we are getting here is that no more are going to come in as of this past Monday..... NOT SURE IF that's totally true. I know Sunday night , they did have new ones coming in.

A lot of the animals NOW (at least dogs) have formed PACKS ; they are wild dog packs running about throughout areas of New Orleans and surrounding parishes/cities. As for cats... some have NEVER seen people so they'll NEVER come out or near a human. Remember, this is the city of New Orleans..... About 70% of the residents there live below poverty

Any food donation is greatly appreciated.

My contact # is 504-512-0306 and I'm in Metairie in Jefferson Parish.

We are desperate and overwhelmed to know of the many and to see SO many animals in need and who will need continued sustainment.

Traci Kestler has been providing a list of addresses of animals still confined to their homes that need to be fed and watered. By the time we get to the first address, we have stopped to care for the ones on the streets along the way. By the end of the day, we've only covered 2-3 of the 8-10 addresses on the list.

At the moment I know of only four of us driving through the streets of neighborhoods in New Orleans for hours putting out food and water for the many left behind. PLEASE, WE NEED ASSISTANCE TO CONTINUE!!

Many animals were released from inside homes that could not be moved to shelters. They need to be fed and watered at least twice weekly. A friend and I drove today for six hours, but only a very small number enjoyed our efforts. Everywhere we looked there was at least one cat or dog looking for food. We ran out of food and water (and some air in one tire) and headed home devastated knowing that many that had not eaten for days had still not been fed.

For a few days after Katrina we ran into HSUS volunteers several times, but in the last week we haven't seen anyone from any organization in any of the neighborhoods. The food that HSUS put out is long gone... the animals are very hungry. PLEASE HELP!!!

Often the military, paramedics and police officers approach us asking for help with an animal at a certain location. Sadly we often can't get to many of them. Pitbulls, Rotties and a few other mixes are in many areas running loose. Feral cats are in the middle of avenues in broad daylight looking for a kibble. We are also sustaining several still in their homes, hoping the guardians will return soon, but we have not been made into many more homes that have been out of food for days. Also and unfortunately many feeders of ferals have lost everything and will likely not return any time soon. WE NEED HELP, PLEASE. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS AND FOOD. THESE ANIMALS DON'T EVEN HAVE A RESTAURANT'S DUMPSTER TO EAT FROM. (THE LEFTOVERS FROM FOUR WEEKS AGO HAVE BEEN EATEN OR HAS ROTTED BEYOND.)

Please forward to any organizations that are maybe able to help.

Thank you,

A lot of the animals NOW (at least dogs) have formed PACKS;
they are wild dog packs running about throughout areas of NO and
surrounding parishes/cities

I was originally told by someone in HSUS that Hattiesburg would stay open to the end of October, and longer if needed. Now it sounds like they want to close-up sooner. Where does HSUS and ASPCA responsibility end? Shouldn't most "loose ends" (no pun intended) be tied up? These dogs were once pets and now they are left to fend for themselves in packs. I have to guess they will at some point be caught and put down by the city if not cared for now.

I should think that even though packs have been formed, that these dogs could still be saved. After all, our own dogs in our own homes form packs of a sort. If these dogs in NO were once domesticated pets, it shouldn't be hard to return to that?

LA: the animal rescue effort is in dire need of people 09:09

Another plea

Hi all,

I am writing for my sister who called me this morning en route to New Orleans (from Baton Rouge rescue ctr.). The word from the front is that the animal rescue effort is in dire need of people. They are currently working on a list of 6,000 addresses in the flooded area which are known to have pets in them. Last night alone 300 more animals made it to the Lamar-Dixon relief ctr. in Baton Rouge where Althea has been since arriving on Sunday. Time is definitely running out for many of these pets.

If anyone can go to Baton Rouge, or knows of anyone who can go, or can just forward this email to anyone and everyone, I know the people working on the front lines would greatly appreciate it. All one has to do to volunteer is show up in at the Lamar-Dixon relief ctr. in Baton Rouge with a driver's license. They will be trained by staff on site to enter the disaster area, break down doors (with full authority) and rescue the animals who were left ! behind. Most of which were left because the residents of these areas have evacuated so often they truly believed they would be right back in their homes.

If anyone has questions call me: 508.240.4262. I have asked Althea to call me later this evening and I can send you all an update at that time. PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO CARES ABOUT THE ANIMALS!

For the animals, Chris

something like a neighborhood watch for animals 07:46

Maybe we need something like a neighborhood watch for animals?

Just reading Linda's ideas about a much needed national rescue and the other posts mentioning this. It sounds like a great idea but a tremendous undertaking. I was thinking about what we could do locally in the short term while solutions are sought for a national animal rescue plan (and definitely NOT connected to FEMA). Something like the neighborhood watch that is one street or a larger grid in rural areas might work or even one apartment complex could be a group? Someone would volunteer to be the "block" (or area) captain, they would be the prime organizer. Pets and livestock in the areas would be identified (everything on a completely voluntary basis, of course) and information collected about these animals, where located, owner's contact info. etc. A neighborhood meeting would be held initially to plan this and then meetings at least once a year to keep everyone motivated and the info. current. Every household participating would have a copy of all the info, and would submit petID info and a list of people they authorize to release the rescued animals to, and also signed releases from each owner, that in event of a major emergency or disaster and if the owner couldn't be contacted, there would be permission to rescue the animals and take them to safety without liability. People could share their resources, like those who had trailers or SUV/RV's could offer to take animals out, people with special equipment like boats, animal traps, cages andcrates, heavy equipment could volunteer to share these with the group during the emergency in order to evacuate the animals. Most people would probably be able to take their own animals out but where Ilive, most people are commuters who work at least an hour away and can't get home quickly (or through roadblocks) but there are also retired people who are home most of the time. Several locations (the primary and a back-up) to evacuate animals to would be decided in advance and permission obtained from those property owners and kept on file. Even a parking lot for everyone to meet in would work because this would be a very short term thing until the owners collected their animals. I don't see this whole idea as something that would need to be too formal or complicated but, more as neighbors with animals helping other neighbors with animals. I see this as a first response type thing. We do have a few informal groups like this in mountain areas in CA where horse people have an advance agreement torescue their neighbor's horses and pets in case of wildfire...(and it often seems to work far better than waiting for the "official" rescue groups or AC to arrive). Just an idea, needs refinement but something to think about.

Chows in Louisiana

Hello -

My wife Kathleen and I fostered and ultimately adopted three chow chow mixes. We became 'hooked' on the breed.

Kathleen is now volunteering with the Humane Society in Louisiana to rescue and reunite animals stranded by Katrina.

There are roughly 20 chow Chows at the shelter that they can't reunite. The dogs are in somewhat poor shape, most are thin, and nearly all have matted coats. A few have eye problems.

The real problem is that the chow chows have been labeled as 'aggressive', which puts them nearly on the same level a pit bulls, rottweilers, and other hard to place dogs.

I'm afraid that if these chow chows don't get relocated from the Louisiana shelter they may end up euthanized.

Can you point me in the direction of any chow chow rescue groups that can take on these dogs? The Humana Society will release them to any bona fide animal rescue group.

Thanks, Tom

Animal Sanctuary hit hard by Rita

KIRBYVILLE, Texas — The operator of an animal sanctuary in Texas is struggling to keep dozens of rescued cats and exotic creatures alive following Hurricane Rita.

Monique Woodard runs the nonprofit Exotic Cat Refuge & Wildlife Orphanage near Kirbyville. The site is in a wooded area about 70 miles north of where Rita came ashore early Saturday.

Woodard says the complex has been devastated by the storm and -- "nobody's helping the animals." Woodard this month took in nearly 100 domestic cats that were rescued in New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina.

Now Woodard and her two daughters are caring for those animals and 25 exotic cats that live at the compound -- including lions, tigers and leopards. Woodard says she's running out of food for the animals. She can't make repairs or get supplies until fallen trees are cleared away, and she has no way to do that.

Exotic animal refuge struggling after Hurricane Rita
By Ted Oberg
KTRK-TV-Houston

(9/26/05 - NEWTON COUNTY, TX) - Hurricane Rita caused so much damage throughout the area known as the Golden Triangle and beyond. Help is coming slowly to places on the main roads - like Orange. But there are still many stories of true struggle off the beaten path.

Monique Woodard's exotic cat refuge near Kirbyville is in shambles. It is home to 18 exotic cats, a monkey, two wolves and a pair of bears. She's barely keeping it together (and 100 domestic cats recently rescued from Katrina).

"I was put here to take care of them. They depend on me for survival," said Monique.

The generator is running, but they put the last gallon of gas in Monday morning. Even so, it's powering only one of the eight freezers full of meat. The rest of the meat is thawing and ruining. Once the meat is gone, these cats will get pretty hungry.

"There's not gonna be no food for these cats, and they're gonna be mad," said Deb Horner, Monique's daughter. "I'm afraid we're probably gonna have to kill them or something, and this is my mom's whole life."

The animals are frightened, penned in by trees and damaged cages, and looking for help from a woman who doesn't know if help will come in time.

"My mind is trying to shut down. I find myself walking like a zombie," said Monique. "I wonder, how could this have happened?"

For hours at the height of the storm, Monique went from cage to cage to make sure none of those animals escaped. They were all just fine. Monique hasn't slept in four days and feels exhausted and helpless, but she needs so much help. But all the roads to her place are closed, and she has no idea how the help will arrive.

If you'd like to help the exotic cat refuge, call at 409-423-4847. (Copyright C 2005, KTRK-TV)
