To Whom it May Concern:
I have attempted contacting HSUS re: the dogs still at the Superdome. The only response given was auto-generated.
PLEASE NOTE: As late as this past week, Newsweek photojournalist Michael Ommanney reported in his online photospread that the Superdome still has a number of "small white" abandoned dogs moving about its perimeter. You can verify his report at the Newsweek website. These dogs need rescuing.
Please, contact someone who can go back to the Superdome and rescue those animal.

This communication provided by Hugs for Homeless Animals You have received this message as part of our OFTAnet Assistance Program to our shelter network.
There is an urgent need to move 80 dogs and 50 cats out of the Southeastern Louisiana area. A previously scheduled air transport has failed to take place and these adoptable (not hurricane rescue) animals are now left in a situation that will end in their euthanasia if they are not moved out immediately.
If you can take in these animals and/or have a means of transport and/or know of someone who can help transport (ground, preferably) please contact Marie Boussard from the St. Martin Humane Society either by telephone: 337-879-6600 or 337-277-9538 or by email as soon as possible.
Carriers are provided. Transportation and a destination is what is needed immediately. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.
Best wishes,

(HADR) Microchips 18:57
HADR = Houston Area Dog Rescues
From: mailto:Houston_Area_Dog_Rescues@yahoogroups-dot-com On Behalf Of Kathy Cameron Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 6:57 PM Subject: (HADR) Microchips
I am part of a tiny rescue group, but this is the microchip I use. They are $4.75 each and as stated free to register. They can also be read by any reader.
This is a copy of the email I received from them today.
Kathy
Pethealth Services, through the 24PetWatch program, has donated hundreds of microchips in an effort to assist organizations attempting to relocate animals abandoned by hurricane Katrina. As has been our practice from the outset, the microchips provided have come with free registration. In all cases, the donations were made to organizations that committed to assisting us in maintaining data integrity and accuracy and agreed to foster and/or adopt the animals in accordance with the guidelines established by the national animal welfare associations who have been on the front lines of the Katrina catastrophe.
While we applaud the efforts of our competitors in providing free microchips and scanners to similar organizations assisting in the recovery efforts, we note with some concern that in their public statements they have given no indication that free registration has also been provided. Based on the fact that they normally charge a sizeable registration fee, we can only conclude that free registration was not included as part of the donation.
Microchips and readers represent only two of the three necessary conditions for successful pet loss recovery. The third, and as we have argued from the outset and perhaps the most important, is accurate pet owner and pet information. The 24PetWatch model is based on providing free registration, thus guaranteeing the best possible accuracy of the database. What Katrina and, more recently, Rita have emphasized is the need for free registration to be provided by all companies on an ongoing basis.
Until such time, the 24PetWatch program remains the most affordable microchip and pet registry/recovery program currently available. At $4.75/chip and free registration, animal welfare organizations now have the ability to promote and offer a microchip program to their adopters. The 24PetWatch microchip meets the FECAVA (unencrypted non-ISO) standards and can be detected and read by the current network of microchip scanners in the United States, regardless of manufacturer.
Unlike our competitors' databases, the 24PetWatch database is regularly updated by proactively contacting registered pet owners at a minimum of once every eleven months. This helps ensure our ability to accurately link a pet's microchip number directly to pet and pet owner information.
As an added service, 24PetWatch also offers pet owners companion products that provide additional protection. 24PetMed Info, 24PetMed Alert and EmergencyCare products are available only to those animals registered in the 24PetWach database. These products provide an added layer of security in cases where a pet becomes lost and in need of medical treatment.
Microchip technology is currently the best method of providing permanent identification for our companion animals. Hurricane Katrina and Rita have clearly demonstrated that the widespread use of such technology will only be realized if technology costs are reduced and registration is both emphasized and provided without cost. We challenge all microchip providers to make free registration a permanent part of their microchip programs.
To learn more about the 24PetWatch microchip recovery program, please visit us as http://www.24petwatch.com/ or call us direct a 866-597-2424.

I spoke with Tara High, President of the Humane Society of Southern Mississippi, and she is very upset that it is being stated that they are going to be euthanizing animals. THEY ARE NOT. They are, however, starting to release animals to rescue groups starting tomorrow and will be doing so in an organized fashion over the next few weeks. According to Tara when I spoke to her at 9:45am this morning, the report that they are going to start euthanizing on October 5 is incorrect.

Pet shooting story on CNN 17:10
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 17:01:23 -0400 From: mailto:bostonrescue@aol-dot-com PLEASE WATCH - Pet shooting story on CNN tonight
This massacre occurred in a gorgeous, historic old building in St. Bernard Parish (outside of New Orleans) which served as an evacuation shelter. The gruesome horrors inside are indescribable. I was there yesterday with rescuers, who discovered the gruesome scene the day before. These dogs were not only killed, it is very obvious some of them endured torture. Please watch and spread the word. THIS MUST BE INVESTIGATED BY AUTHORITIES TO PREVENT SUCH HORROR FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN, AND TO PUNISH THE CULPABLE PARTIES.

Volunteers needed in St. Bernards Parrish 16:47
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 16:47:38 -0600 From: "nancy" mailto:pippy@montana-dot-com Subject: Volunteers
I just talked to Diane in Florida and she is sending in a truck tomorrow, they are dropping supplies at Biloxi and then going up to Iverton, LA and then to Shallnette (Chalmette), LA in St. Bernards Parrish. She said that they have flat bottomed boats and are going to get dogs out of houses.
She asks that if anybody is going down there tomorrow to go to these 2 places and help them. She said that volunteers are desperately needed in there. She's been told that volunteers can eat, shower and sleep on the cruise ships but she doesn't know for certain yet. There are other towns in this area that haven't had help yet and need some. She gave me an address in Shallnette (Chalmette) but I forgot to ask if that's where to meet or not. I'm calling her again later tonight and will ask then about the address and get further information.
Thank you.

- This covers areas just north of Frazier Park (grapevine) where 5/99 split, north to Sacramento... this is a very often used route to get to the bay area, BTW. Sacto is often used to get dogs to SFran given the route is straighter... and about 1.5 hours E. from SF. Those of us that transport through the central valley would use 99/5 south and this is normally the route taken through Fresno/Bakersfield/Grapevine/Los Angeles. From there, east to Az, several routes could be taken: 210 E to 57 south to 10 E for one.

Hi everyone,
I have a special request for all people that have any type of press connection (and even those that do not. :-) if at all possible.
Below I have written a press release that really needs to get out. I have called and verified all details myself with the people involved. If you can find it in your heart, please send this release to your sources!! If you want to edit the release a bit, please feel free. The important thing is to get this out to the public.
Thanks so much! Erin Bennett mailto:erin@coacherin-dot-com

Vermillion Parish still affected by Rita’s Wrath
Members of the cattle and horse farmers in Vermillion Parish in Louisiana were crying out for help today. Not because their animals were drowning – but because now the animals are starving to death.
The flood waters of Rita swept away the food for their livestock and the horses and cattle are literally dying of starvation. The local stores are out of food and they have not been able to get the word out so that more shipments come in fast enough.
People were, and still are, very generous to the animals affected by the two hurricanes, but most people don’t stop and think about the large livestock that is affected. It’s normal for us to just go the local grocery store and pick up supplies for our dogs, cats and other small animals – but where do you go for cattle feed? And what do you feed them?
In the past, these questions would have been answered by the youngest among us – but as the US has moved away from the farm and into the city, these answers are not so easily found.
The average cow eats 3 pounds of food a day – that’s per cow. And the average horse eats 5 pounds of food per day.
In Vermillion parish – there are over 10,000 cattle and over 4,000 horses. The farmers there are watching their cattle and horses die before their eyes because they can’t feed them.
Not only do these farmers need this food now, they will need it in the next couple of months while they drain the waters, get their livestock back to their own farms and rebuild their food supplies.
Here’s what they need:
- a.. Range Cubes for the cattle – because they do not have troughs to feed them from – they were swept away in the floods also.
- b.. Horse Pellets for the horses.
Please ship these items to:
Andrew Granger – Local Ag Agent 1105 West Port Street Abbyville, LA 70510
This is the address of the county agent and all foods will be distributed to area farmers.
The loss of these animals will not only affect the livelihood of the people of Vermillion Parish, but will in a short period of time affect the prices of food for everyone!
For more local information, please contact the local county agent – Andrew Granger at 337-898-4335.

Newest update on volunteering in Louisiana 13:57
From: Alicia Moore mailto:alicia@idausa-dot-org Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 1:57 PM Newest update on volunteering in Louisiana
Dear IDA members,
I just spoke with IDA staff down in New Orleans about the status of the rescue efforts. Volunteers are still doing search & rescue today, and hope to continue to be able to do so. They are still finding at least 200 animals alive every day! There may be some threat of the search and rescue efforts being shut down after today. Be assured that the people heading up the rescue efforts will fight against that happening. However, regardless, my understanding is that volunteers will be needed to do food drops, to feed and water animals they have not been able to get out of homes, to care for animals who have been rescued, and potentially to move those animals to new facilities, etc.
Therefore, I would continue to encourage people to go down and volunteer - if for some reason you are not needed for search and rescue for Lamar-Dixon, you will definitely be needed elsewhere. As of now, please continue to head to Lamar-Dixon, ask for Jane Garrison if you have any questions. I will continue to provide updates as I receive information. Thank you again for all of your flexibility, patience, and commitment.
Most Sincerely,
Alicia Moore Assistant to the President In Defense of Animals mailto:alicia@idausa-dot-org (415) 388-9641 ext. 228
Update on Waco TX situation - elderly evacuees w/ pets 13:50
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 13:50:56 EDT From: mailto:Bbruce777@aol-dot-com Update on Waco TX situation - elderly evacuees w/ pets - Walmart shelter
I have confirmed the following through Fuzzy Friends Rescue in Waco:
Crates have been provided for pets that arrived on buses with their people being relocated from Beaumont to the abandoned Walmart in Waco set up as a shelter.
The animals are being moved temporarily to a separate building by Waco Humane Society. They are trying to place these pets in foster homes while the people are at the shelter. They assured me that the pets will be well cared for and returned to their people when they are in a place where they can have them.
Leanne (Fuzzy Friends) told me that one family of seven has already been moved out to an apartment, but they cannot have their pets there. They have been back to visit and check on their pets.
This is much better than what I heard happened at Huntsville where the animals were left outside the building in 102 degree heat.
Thank you Waco!

How to rescue dog under trailer 11:49
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 11:49:59 -0500 From: "kathy smith" <kfs927@bellsouth.net> Subject: dog under trailer
I am hoping someone might have some ideas to help me catch this dog.
He was rescued from a flooded house where he had been trapped. A FEMA guy rescued him and put him at this mobile home. But he had to leave town. Someone at the trailer is supposed to be caring for him, but I have my doubts about that. He is very timid and I can not catch him. He stays under the trailer, but will run off if I manage to get close to him. I have been going over and feeding him, but he won't come to the dish unless I am far away. I left notes at the trailer for the folks to call me, but they have not. THere is a transport set up to get him up north, but I need to catch him. He is a large dog, but is not mean at all, just timid and scared.
He is near the Diberville, MS Walmart if anyone is close to there, maybe they can help me. I can't call animal control as they will not turn him over to rescue..
Any ideas??? Kathy & the naked dogs Gulfport, MS Crest Care Rep http://www.crest-care.com/

They also reported that 1,000 of bodies were being bulldozed -- seen by the husband of a poster. Can you confirm this Are you talking about human bodies? The horror scene I witnessed was animals tied up with curtain cords and left to starve, some had been shot. I'll give more details later..I'll attach a couple of pictures. I have not heard of anyone bulldozing anything but mud from the streets. I will try to verify...
Here is another tragic story I am working on. I am going in tommorow to help these folks photodocument the murder and deliberate starvation of their family of animals at Sebastian Roy school.. 8 miles down the road from the Beauregard school I was at yesterday. If people died in Beauregard school the bodies had been removed.. Read this new tragic plea for help. I am working on getting CNN to go in with me on this one if I can, if not I will go alone to document it before the perpertrators get in there to clean up their crime scene..It is HORRIFIC
The day of hurrican Katrina, 6 dogs were put into Sebastien Roy School on Bayou Rd. in St. Bernard Parish. This was the only safe place to put the dogs. These were full bred pit bulls, well trained, my brother has bred them for fifteen years. Poncho, the head male was eight years old and superbly trained. Cheyenne was pregnant and near the birth. The others were three females, three years, five months, and seven months and a male who was five months. Yesterday my brother was able to enter the parish and go see for his dogs. This is what he found: The head male and and the three females were shot dead, shell casings litter the area. They appear to have been dead for at least two weeks. The young male, a five month puppy, was locked in a room and found dead. This dog was left to starve, which he did. The mother had given birth to three puppies, all were found locked in a stairwell with no water or food. The puppies were well, but the mother was near death, never has he seen a dog as skinny as she was. My brother is furious at the murder of his animals and intends to return tomorrow to photograph the evidence and take any legal action that he can. He was told by a first hand witness that the St. Bernard Sheriff dept. did the shooting. This was not necessary. We can understand that the head male might have to be put down because he would defend his family, but the others were puppies, they would not hurt anyone.
Below are pics I attached from Beauregard school. I got word tonight that CNN got in there aftere I reported it and will try to air it tonight or tommorow. My mind is spinning trying to help the some 400 pet owners that have contacted me today. So if I forget to write again and tell you the full Beauregard Story, call me at (504)XXX-2399 Marilyn McGee http://www.katrinafoundpets.com/very_graphic_pictures.htm

New Feature for Big Dogs That Need a Home 08:51

Big Dogs face bigger Challenges. Nothing fits. They make bigger mistakes. Apartments don't like them. They're medical bills are higher. And often times, they're the last to get a new home when placed in a shelter. Big Paws Only, a large and giant breed community, has developed a new feature in it's Paw Prints section for listing big dogs that need adoption complete with images and details, and broadcasts it across the forum/boards and its member sites. They're easy to list, and it could just find him/her a family!

Dogs Shot in St. Bernard Parrish 07:35
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 07:35:26 -0700 From: "Beth C. Thompson" mailto:thompson@oles-dot-com Dogs Shot in St. Bernard
Below is the email I sent to Anderson Cooper on this issue:
Mr. Cooper:
Thank you for your attention to the atrocity that occurred in St. Bernard Parish, where 14 dogs were shot, after their owners were forced to leave them behind. This is an absolute act of animal cruelty and needs to be resolved. The perpetrators need to be identified and put in jail. Those people who left their animals tried so hard to protect them, and write on the walls, begging people to care for these dogs. We owe it to those people to get answers and some modicum of justice.
Thank you -- please follow up.

My email to St. Bernard Parish officials:
Dear Sirs/Ms:
I heard about the 14 dogs that were shot in a shelter in your Parish, after their owners were forced to leave these dogs behind. It appears likely that St. Bernard Parish officials may have done the killing. Please investigate this atrocity and punish those involved. Those poor people were forced to leave those animals behind, and they were so desperate to save these animals that they wrote on the walls, begging for the animals' lives. Someone took it into their own hands to kill that hope. This is a clear case of animal cruelty. You need to address it, and you need to show the rest of the country that you are willing to investigate and get justice. We have heard some disturbing stories coming from your Parish, including the story of another official shooting dogs. You have a lot to answer for.

The CNN site has a video story about the 14 dogs shot in a shelter in St. Bernard, after their owners were forced to leave them there. It appears that St. Bernard officials may have done the shooting. We CANNOT let this one go ignored. PLEASE contact Anderson Cooper and ask him to follow up. PLEASE call the officials in St. Bernard and tell them, including the sheriff, that the people who did this to these innocent dogs needs to be in jail for animal cruelty. PLEASE!!

Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 11:50:54 -0700 From: "Beth C. Thompson" mailto:thompson@oles-dot-com Email to Louisiana Attorney General's Office
PLEASE contact the Louisiana Attorney General's Office and let them know we want this crime investigated! I sent the following email to them:
As I am certain your office is now aware, 14 dogs were shot in an inhumane manner in St. Bernard Parish. The owners of these dogs were forced to leave them during Katrina. They desperately wanted their dogs saved; they even wrote information on the walls begging for the animals' lives. Someone, likely a Louisiana official, inhumanely shot each of these pets. These animals were killed in a particularly cruel way -- shot in the body cavity so that death only came from blood loss. This is clearly a crime. The country will be watching to see how St. Bernard Parish and Louisiana address this atrocity. Those animals, and their owners, who lost everything, deserve answers. They deserve to have the perpetrators brought to justice.
As you may be aware, Pasado's Safe Haven is offering a $10,000 reward for information regarding this crime. It is my hope that your office will do everything you can to prosecute those who committed this terrible crime.
