RESCUERS - WE NEED YOUR NOTES RE THE NEED FOR HELP IN LA

11/5/05 NOTES NEEDED BY SUNDAY NOV 6 EVENING

We need to gather facts that substantiate the need for animal control help and the need for additional vets in the LA areas. We would like to gather that information by Monday morning so that we can put together a document containing various incidents.

A report which mentioned an experienced trapper saying she had never heard so many dogs in the woods and that pigs/boar are dying in a way that is not easy to determine (thus there could be poison or environmental issues of concern) is the kind of first hand information we need right now. These must be first hand accounts with your name attached.

We would prefer that it not contain alot of the story lines unless they are relevant to this task.

If you could have the subject line read: CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS? -- that will help us keep this information together.

Thank you,
Kate Danaher

[LouisianaDogCatRescu] Available/New Small Dogs in South Louisiana

PLEASE CROSS POST THIS WIDELY OR SEND TO ANYONE YOU THINK MAY BE ABLE TO HELP!!!!

There are new dogs in the Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control, Kaplan, LA.

Let me update you on the ones that were there previously.

The dobe was adopted today The weim was claimed by the owner as well as the big black lab that was running with it. The little beagle mix turned out to be a young puppy so is not a beagle at all. The patterdale is still there...may have a pending adoption but needs a back up rescue just in case.

Now for the dogs that are there.

There is a boxer mix that has to be seen to be appreciated. This boy is a beautiful red brindle with a flashy white collar. He has a docked tail, a shiny coat and is fat and sassy. Everything about him says boxer, except for that nose....what a shame...the nose marks him as a mix. But that boxer temperament and personality and beautiful coat would be more than enough for me.

There is a small rattie mix female - maybe 1 or 2 years old - 8 to 10 pounds....very cute and very scared.

An extremely nice big rattie male...this boy is healthy looking, muscular and would be a great hang out dog. He loves to ride in a truck and will hunt rats and mice in the yard.

The little dog that I though was a beagle mix turns out to be a very young puppy...probably not more than 2 to 3 months old. Which means he is probably a blue heeler pup. But he is very cute and it would be a shame to see him die.

The best of the bunch (beside the boxer mix) is a little, young JRT mix female that came in today as an owner surrender. She is already spayed and very cute and sweet. She is also small...in the 8 to 10 pound range.

I don't know if Rita is the cause of all these very nice dogs being turned in or what....but every one is adoptable and too nice to let die.

Please, please take a look at my picturetrail album linked below and see if you can help 1...or 2 of them.

THE PET RAILROAD

CONTACT INFORMATION:

DESCRIPTION:

  • The Pet Railroad is building a network of animal lovers in each state who can help transport pets from the Gulf Coast to loving foster homes and rescue groups. Animals have filled makeshift staging areas and local shelters. (From Kinship Circle: Julia Fischer, of Animal Rescue Foundation in Mobile, AL reports the euthanasia rate among beleaguered Gulf Coast shelters has never been higher due to hurricane rescues and evacuees’ owner-surrendered animals). Animal facilities are out of space and need to move animals quickly to other shelters and foster homes.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE PET RAILROAD:

  • TRANSPORT: http://www.thepetrailroad.com/transport
  • Follow instructions to determine what geographic region you can transport to and from.
  • This will lead you to a simple volunteer information form.

FOSTER: http://www.thepetrailroad.com/foster

  • Follow instructions to enroll in a master foster list for each state.
  • Lists are distributed to shelters/groups handling foster care.

VOLUNTEER TEAMS: http://www.thepetrailroad.com/volunteers

  • A great way to get involved, even you can’t travel to the Gulf Coast.
  • 1. Transport Team Leaders: Responsible for keeping a list of volunteers for transport for each state.
  • 2. Foster Team Leaders: Responsible for keeping a list of volunteers for foster homes for each state.
  • 3. Attorney: To offer legal advice.
  • 4. Rescue group and shelter liaisons: Rescue groups and shelters that can house animals.
  • 5. Advocates: Volunteers to spread the word about The Pet Railroad. We need people to post pre-written blurbs to message boards, call shelters and other advocacy groups and send pre-written press releases to the media. If you are active on animal-related message boards, we need your help!

UPDATE FROM THE FIELD:

Question: Are volunteers still needed in New Orleans? Answer: Desperately!

WE STILL DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS TO SUSTAIN ANIMALS WITH FOOD/WATER UNTIL WE CAN CATCH (TRAP) THEM. They are surviving in packs or burrowing under homes, some of which may be bulldozed.

A cat cowers in the dirt under her broken home. A pack of dogs dart between shattered cars. Quick shadows. Glimpsed after dark. Now mere vestiges of their former lives.

Where once there was a home, a warm lap and kind hand... There is starvation and death for thousands of animals in the ruins of New Orleans.

November 2: We rescued an emaciated cat living amid the debris of a destroyed home. This cat was experiencing liver failure by the time we reached her. Sadly, the cat died while in transit to the emergency clinic...

These animals survived hurricanes and floods. How can we let them succumb to starvation and disease? In New Orleans Parish, the Louisiana SPCA operates with just a few officers. Nearby St. Bernard Parish has virtually no animal control.

Please reserve days, weeks whatever you can to help New Orleans animals. JUST DO IT. All of your questions are answered below.

WHO DOES ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS NEED?

  • 1. People to help put out feeding stations.
  • 2. People to trap dogs/cats.
  • 3. People to transport rescued animals to Best Friends in Mississippi each evening.

  • In other words, we need people!

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE IN NEW ORLEANS?

HELP KATRINA PETS-ACTION NEEDED

From: "misnya" mailto:misnya@yahoo-dot-com
Subject: HELP KATRINA PETS-ACTION NEEDED

HELP KATRINA PETS-ACTION NEEDED

HSUS has gotten in millions and millions of dollars and they are still collecting donations for the katrina pets. This money should be used fully for the pets affected by the disaster therefore please Call Wayne Pacelle 1-202-452-1100. CEO

1. It says on the HSUS website that it has dozens of people and volunteers to help reunite people and their pets. This is despicable. With the millions of dollars they have received and continue to receive ,tell Mr. Pacelle they need to spend money and hire 400 or 500 Paid People and help these Katrina pet owners find their pets now. These people have suffered enough. They need to pay money and stop using volunteers and get the job done now. They pulled this baloney from the beginning of the disaster when they should have paid people to go out and rescue pets. Many pets died that could have been rescued if they paid people. Tell them they need to pay people now to continue rescue, feeding and giving water to the hundreds of homeless animals that are dying on the street from starvation. It is not over for the Katrina pets and the money was sent to HSUS to help. Rescue Is Not Over. More Animals Will Perish Unless they Get Help Now.

2. HSUS needs to make known on tv that volunteers or ("pet angels" as I like to call them) will help you search for your pet

3. Demand that HSUS with the millions of dollars they received for Katrina pets, that they create a national public service commercial to tell people due to the fact of hurricane Katrina and Rita the shelters are more than ever overflowing. Millions of these innocent animals are killed because there aren't enough homes with people breeding, selling and not spaying and neutering. Please adopt a pet now and make room for more katrina pets that are still being rescued off the streets. And now with the holiday season coming , don't buy animals. Animals aren't things to be bought. Go to your local shelter. For every animal you buy, they die.( they need to show animals on death row in shelters).

4. Also tell them to make announcements or newspaper adds that shelters need volunteers more than ever to maintain the overflow of hurricane disaster pets.

5. Also urge HSUS to do radio, newspaper and tv letting people know that if they lost a pet during the Katrina disaster do not assume your pet has died. Many animals survived weeks after the disaster and were pulled out alive. Many people don't even know to search for their pets assuming they have perished. There are many miracle stories.

6. Urge HSUS to do radio, tv etc to list the names of people whose pets have been found but they can't locate the owner.

7. HSUS needs to make it publically known that people will get money to have their rescued pet sent to them that is in another state's shelter. Many people can't get their pets couldn't they can't afford to pay for travel or airfare to get them and don't know HSUS is supposed to pay to re-unite them. It's like a secret.

8. Ask HSUS what they are doing in reference to calling every shelter across the country and working something out so the shelters hold katrina pets for many months so people have a chance to find their pet. There is probably about 100 or more websites etc that needs to be researched for a person to find their pet from this disaster. It is ridiculous and deplorable that many shelters are giving these pets up for adoption before the owner can find them. It will take months and months to track down pets. These people lost everything. HSUS got the money from donations. They shipped the pets all over the country. They must take responsibility to work it out with shelters so people can get back their pets. People are in despair and emotionally sick and distraught. They want their pets back.Tell Mr. Pacelle to make a public announcement that all shelters must hold animals for many months so the owners have a chance to find their pets. The public must be aware of this problem so they can also pressure the shelters.

9. Tell Pacelle they should donate money to the reward by Pasado toward the horrible massacre that took place in New Orleans where innocent animals were tied up and shot and bled to death. Highly suspect is police personel. If the reward gets high enough someone will talk. This must become a landmark case and show no more tolerance for sick abusive acts done to animals. People were forced to leave these pets only to learn they were murdered including a service dog. This was part of the Katrina disaster and Mr. Pacelle owes it to the animals and owners to get justice.

Subject: Audubon Zoo Set to Reopen

Audubon Zoo, one of New Orleans's top attractions, is set to reopen the day after Thanksgiving. The zoo will be the first major tourist attraction to reopen post-Katrina. The first visitors to the zoo will be first graders from a local school. After the storm, Baton Rouge zoo employees helped the Audubon Zoo recover by caring for animals. The Audubon golf course should be ready for play this month. No date has been given for the reopening of the aquarium or other attractions run by the Audubon Institute.
