Rabies After-bite shots?

Subject: Rabies After-bite shots?

Would Lynn or someone please post where one would go in New Orleans (or as close by as possible) to get the POST-bite rabies shots? At least the first couple of shots in the series?

I'll be going down to NO Sun the 27th with a couple of partners and none of us have the pre-rabies shots. I did ask my doctor but he didn't have a clue where to get it and said it's a series of shots that I didn't have time to get anyway. I then asked at the Humane Society I work for (part-time) and they said the same thing about the timing of the shots, and that they only pay for the kennel staff to have the shots.

So I'm happy to head down and work without the pre-bite shot series, but given the type of animal trapping/rescues going on now, I would feel a lot better about things if I knew where we could go immediately if we are bitten.

Certainly don't want to have to drive 18 hours home in a panic over something that I'm sure is available much closer to NO than Maryland...

Sorry if this is a stupid question overall- maybe we would just go to a local hospital? But I don't know what level of "normal" hospital services are even available yet in NO.

Thanks for your help in ironing this question out. We do have our tetanus shots and I have Hepatitis A & B vax as well, although my doctor said he thought Hep not necessary any more due to the lack of standing water in NO at this time. Please note, that is HIS opinion, if you're thinking of going down, please get YOUR doctor's advice!!!!!

Best, Shelley

Re: Rabies After-bite shots?

I'm speaking from personal experience and I'm not a doctor.

I went down with only a tetnus shot and found out when I was in NOLA that we quaratined dogs for 10 days if they bit someone. For medical attention we'd go to the Combat Support Hospital at the west end of the Convention Center.

It seems as though this is still open - see the City of New Orleans situation reports posted at [1] (http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=1&load=~/PortalModules/ViewNewsStory.ascx&itemid=23) (as of Nov 17th it was still open [2] (http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=1&load=~/PortalModules/ViewPressRelease.ascx&itemid=3277), search for "Mass care/housing/human services")

These situation reports also have information on other medical facilities, just search on the latest date for "Public health and medical systems") and also links to a site of nearby facilities [3] (http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=1&tabid=51)

Good luck!

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA

THOUSANDS of Hurricane Pets have been relocated to other parts of the United States and Canada. Some have been lucky enough to have been found by their owners and are now awaiting transport back to their homes.

If you are taking a vacation this holiday season and would be willing to transport a Hurricane Katrina/Rita pet from your destination back to the Lake Charles or New Orleans area, please email me at mailto:yepitsme770@yahoo-dot-com for more information.

Some organizations are willing to provide a gas card to help with gas. This would be a wonderful Christmas gift to people who have already lost so much.

Re: CHRISTMAS GIFT ~ TRANSPORT A PET

The ASPCA also has a reunification fund to pay for or reimburse air fare etc to get a K dog back to it's owner. You have to have proof of course that's it a K dog etc and be a 501 c3. Info avail on their website.

Tylertown LASPCA dogs are cold. These animals are outside, and are so thin that they feel the cold even more so. A donation of 50 dog sweaters in size medium would be greatly appreciated.

If you can help, please send to:
