Hi all;
Here is our 4 step plan for New Orleans for 2006. Let us know what you think!
1) Attached to this email, with full copyrights granted to the recipient of this email, is the graphics for a newspaper ad. Simply drop in the text and phone and web info of your organization or group and run the ad in your local papers. Attached are a Black & White version for newspapers and a color version from which you can print 8" by 10" flyers to put in vet offices, bulletin boards at work, etc. Attached as an example is the ad we (C.A.N.) are running starting this week in two local papers in Manhattan. This ad should create new foster homes, to which Best Friends can arrange transportation of more animals from Tylertown. One of the bottlenecks in the rescue operations in N.O. is that not enough animals are being removed from Best Friends' Tylertown shelter. Animals have to be moved out of Tylertown at an escalated pace so the trapping operations of Jane Garrison and others can have room for newly trapped animals. We are on a hard deadline of Spring as mating season is going to flood the packs of dogs with puppies ...if we do not remove thousands by then. The first puppies are appearing already. The sizes of packs have become as large as 20 dogs now. By Spring the sizes of the packs will become 50 or more if we do not accelerate the removal of street animals. Noah's Wish's reported euthanasia of its last 100 dogs (by giving them to animal control) is only the beginning of a mass euthanasia which is inevitably going to occur unless...
2) We raise about $5000 so we buy a used house trailer and pick up truck and move to N.O. for a few months. Primary purpose would be to continue feed and watering and increase the rate of animals being removed thru Tylertown by increasing trapping. We already have a group of 5 and 2 vehicles leaving in Jan, which as a result could then be increased to 10-15 people including our own creature comforts for long term stays by volunteers. If you or your organization run the ad you too may be able to raise funds to continue your operations in NO, which is so needed.
3) As for the second purpose of our (C.A.N.) trip: Tylertown, MS has about 100 dogs which have been classified as "having issues." Best Friends is unable to give these dogs to anyone other than very experienced dog handlers and rehabilitators. If we (C.A.N.) spend a good amount of time in New Orleans, we can work with most, if not all, of those dogs and probably have a good number, if not most of them, re-classified.
4) One of the most common reasons dogs become aggressive after trauma is the improper use of traps and/or catch poles. We posted a brand new video we shot while in New Orleans showing how to use a dog trap humanely. In December we will be posting another video we shot in N.O. entitled "Humane Catch Pole Usage." It is imperative that everyone using dog traps and catch poles follow protocols close to that in the videos or there will be more and more dogs ending up at Tylertown classified as aggressive.
Everyone is welcome to contact me to find out the success of the ad we are running here in NYC. It is running every week in December. If we get the funding as a result it would be a real shot in the arm for the rescue effort in New Orleans.
And if it works for our rescue plans, chances are it will work for yours . ......Give the ad a try.
Let's not abandon these animals in the coming months. It is obvious now that the great majority of N.O. residents are not coming back. Only 60,000 out of 450,000 have returned three months after the disaster. Tens of thousands of dogs and cats must be removed from the 150 sq. mile area, which will need a long-lasting, well-oiled effort.
Let's do it, even as the large groups hide under public scrutiny. There will be plenty of time to crucify our colleagues who betrayed the animals. Right now we must increase rescue operations, not get diverted by politics.

ABOUT COMPANION ANIMAL NETWORK ("CAN")
Garo Alexanian founded C.A.N. with the goal of ending the 100 year old policy of killing unwanted and lost dogs and cats in NY City. With C.A.N.'s political lobbying, litigation, and authoring of legislation which was introduced in both the State Assembly and State Senate, and its passage through committee, N.Y. City finally agreed to try to switch to "no-kill" animal control. The NY City Council acknowledged his successful efforts in Resolution 982. Since then New York has received over $20 million in grants as a result. Subsequently, Garo Alexanian served as Senior Assistant to former NY City Deputy Mayor Herb Rickman, who was at the time a senior advisor to mayoral candidate Rudy Giuliani. He also served as an informal advisor on animal control to Mayor Rudy Giuliani during his first term.
