C4P Update: Canadian Volunteers & Katrina Rescue Dogs
From: M. Michelle Nadon mailto:m.m.nadon@sympatico-dot-ca Sent: Monday, December 26, 2005 8:24 AM Subject: C4P Update: Cdn Volunteers & Katrina Rescue Dogs Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaDogCatRescu/
Friends, here's our latest update...
Team Two: leaves Tuesday, Dec. 27th from Cambridge Humane 10AM, and are traveling as a large group to ARNO base camp in Metarie...18 Fabulous Volunteers!!!! Staggered returns through new years and into January...
Reunions: Making the journey with them will be Noel, a female rotweiller who was rescued by Dr. Lynette Brown, Pine Valley Animal Hospital, London, Ont. Noel was heartworm + and Dr. Brown has been treating and fostering her. Amazingly her family has been found, and she will be transported from her Cdn foster home to reunite her with family in Slidell, Louisiana, an hour + north of New Orleans...
ARNO: Upon arrival they unload supplies and set up dog runs - volunteers will be jumping in head first... Other Shelters: Volunteers will travel to Roicy shelter on Thurs Dec 29th to pull dogs scheduled to be euthanized, take them to be vetted; bring them back to NO to be housed. They will also be visiting a no kill facility, Bastrow, run by a wonderful elderly couple who do not receive the same support as the largers shelters and hope to pull some dogs from there as well as donate supplies. Team Two will be coordinating with the fabulous Chris Mclaughlin, who works with ARNO on animal export, and they will coordinate the transportation of animals from high kill facilities, in Gulfport and Biloxi to northern shelters where they will have a chance at adoption.
Donations: thanks to everyone on the ground in Canada, Team Two is set with rental and gas, grocery and vet bill funds, and have a ton of supplies! We're happy for all the help for animals.. but please note that only funds written to Tiffany Longarini and Mitch Nadon will be issued receipts - we cannot guarantee receipts any other volunteers are picking up donations in C4P name!
Adoptions: looks like everyone's adopted out except for King and Francis... Francis is doing exceptionally well - downtown Toronto makes him nervous, but otherwise, he's having a blast. He has a new coat and collar and, with his gold BF3016 tag, is looking and feeling quite groovy. Francis would benefit from the company of another small dog, and a caring human who will love, protect and teach him, while caring for his needs. A safe and engaging environment, where he can grow (this dog is very young), and have a pal to play with, about his size and age. King needs a home. If we can find a better set up for Francis (read I have everything but a property for him to run on...), I'd die of happiness to take King....what I lack in property for King, I can make up for in shepherd intelligence and good old fashioned exercise... he and I got along like two peas in a pod ...
Thanks: SO many have stepped up to help... the C4P team (Leanne, Judy, Laurel, Andrea, Tiff) and our C4P network; veteranarians, business owners, rescue groups and animal advocates from across Canada and all our new (biped) brothers and sisters in the States..... Special thanks to Reg from Regional Fencing for donating dogs runs, let alone construction and delivery...Chris McLaughlin, Shelagh Nerney, Brenda Campbell, bestfriends.org, Truffle Treasures in Ottawa for support and outreach... Mary Hickman for video cam... members of media who continue their coverage of this ongoing crisis... Thanks to Melissa, Stephen Franco and Tom Parker at Enterprise Rent a Van ... staff of Holiday Inn Express, in Carrollton, Kentucky for hosting Judy and I with 14 dogs, and dedicating staff to loading in morning ... Sue Moore for relentlessly calling US shelters trying to find ones that will accept Katrina dogs. Meg Brubacher, for logistical support and unwavering committment to animals. Bonnie and staff at Cambridge Humane Society who have successfully adopted out 64 Katrina dogs to loving forever homes, and will take as many more as we can bring. Thanks to the Quebec animal rescue network for their support and ongoing rescue efforts here in Cda (particularly northern dogs) while many of our usual advocate/volunteers have gone South...Denise Dando, Luan, Kimberly June and last, but certainly not least, the volunteers...people willing to sacrifice Christmas vacations to help animals in need. Every single action, thought, call, email, viewer, reader, plan, outreach, expression of interest and expression of care, every single thing makes an incredible difference.... the cummulative/collective effect is astounding...everyone, take a moment and smile! And hug your pet(s)!!
Next Steps: we look forward to hearing from our team in the South, and wish them strength. Best advice: remember to eat and sleep. Best Friends would not be opening two new staging areas in Biloxi/ Gulfport and New Orleans if they weren't needed. This is the final phase of the disaster, securing those animals that can be secured from the area, stabilizing the holding system for all them and facilitating reunions, facilitating their present and future wellfare, adoptions...Help spread the word..
C4P Admin: a few addresses outstanding, then list of donors goes to Cambridge, for processing phase one donations ... Check us out on Pay Pal!! http://www.paypal.com/ . Applying for charitable status in new year, so we can paper our own stuff! If anyone wants to join the C4P electronic network, just write us and we'll include you..
Merry Christmas everyone!
for the animals, m.
