Debbie: Roicy pics are up
Date: Friday, December 30, 2005 From: "Debbie" <rescuerealtor @cox .net> Subject: Roicy pics are up Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaDogCatRescu/
Roicy pics are up....descriptions will follow tomorrow...too tired. Awesome animals...lots of pups.....another beloved blue Heeler....couple dogs I am not sure about so welcome some ID help....the Pointer looking dog and the brown one they are calling a Husky mix. And Labs, Labs, Labs....all colors, ages and sizes. Some moron probably dumped that poor Mama with 4 babies in the country. There is a very interesting looking dog named Precious whose original owner died. She is supposed to be part Saint, part Lab, and part Cocker. Kinda reminds me of a Clumber but black and white. The shelter will be closed Monday, no PTS Tuesday, deadline Thursday at 5 with rescue required to be there by 3. As of Jan 1, Virginia will be strictly enforcing the new policy of required paperwork in advance and proof of spay and rabies within a certain period...think it is 30 days, but may be 15....don't remember. Should the animal have URI or kennel cough and the surgery cannot be done, no prob....just have the vet fax over a statement and send the proof when it happens. Failure to follow up will result in the org no longer being able to pull. The person who pulls is required to sign a statement that the animal will be spayed/neutered, properly taken care of, and the state requirements are attached.

Report on the infectious diseases of pets exported from the Gulf Coast
From: "Carmen Glotfelty" <GlotfeltyC @mail .vetmed .ufl .edu> Sent: Friday, December 30, 2005 12:34 PM Subject: Katrina-Rita Rescue Animals Forwarded to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Katrina-Pet-Rescue-info/
Hello everyone:
The vet schools at the University of Florida and UC Davis are preparing a report on the infectious diseases of pets exported from the Gulf Coast disaster areas.
While we would be very excited to receive blood samples from cats and dogs, we are also collecting reports of infectious diseases that have been routinely performed for many of the pets. These include heartworm, Ehrlichia, and Lyme (the IDEXX 3DX SNAP test) for dogs and FeLV, FIV, and heartworm for cats.
All cats and dogs that were exported from the disaster area and have been tested for at least one of these diseases are eligible to be included. We are hoping to receive reports on more than 1,000 animals.
If your groups received animals transferred from the Gulf, please take a moment to complete the attached sheet and return it to me. If the attachment does not come through, please contact me and I will send it another way.
Thanks for your help!

Kathleen: Never Forget - my resolution
Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2005 20:10:56 -0800 (PST) From: Kathleen <isabelladams @yahoo .com> Subject: Never Forget - my resolution Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Katrina-Pet-Rescue-info/
All,
I saw a news clip about Katrina tonight and, again, find myself in tears. I realized that this year my resolution is different and so much more important.
There are so many for whom I continue to search. I find myself looking at animals everywhere...wondering. I also find myself thinking of an email I sent to one of my Senators. I was quite distraught at the time and poured out my heart. I told him of my father in a nursing home, my brother who is disabled, my elderly mother and all of these family member's love for animals. I ended the email with the fear that haunts me. The image of myself on a highway near our homes with our animals, waiting for rescue. I didn't get a response for several weeks. I thought perhaps he didn't care.
Then, I received his response. At first I thought it might be canned. But, then he said he hoped if we ever met if it won't be on the highway I mentioned, as we sit with our animals, waiting, wondering, if anyone cared. I called his office in DC to thank him and spoke with one of his aides. She has a Great Pyr. This was in the thick of the problem. They were overwhelmed, but she too was heartbroken. She spent 50 minutes speaking with me. I negotiate agreements with fortune 5 companies for a living - I know positioning. This wasn't that. She was scared for her dog. She said she was making arrangements with friends in case she ever couldn't get to her. There are many who understand.
So, in this new year may we never forget the victims of Katrina. Human and fur. May we continue to work to ensure that no citizen of this country ever experience this horror again. This year, and I think for many years to come, I will do everything I can to ensure that I never forget.

Hi.
I just got back from my 3rd trip down there. Most of the time was spent in Slidell (on the north side of the Lake, opposite East NO), but I was also in St Bernards Parish, Ward 9, Magazine Street, and downtown. I posted some new pictures at http://www.shutterfly.com. If you log in there, username = animalrelief@yahoo.com and password = password. The pictures from my latest trip are in albums entitled Adopt Me, Slidell, Creature Comforts, and Dog Park. Other albums are from previous trips.
How to construct a dog pen quickly
Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2005 18:00:49 -0600 From: "Ellen Moore" <emoore @ametro .net> Subject: dog pen Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaDogCatRescu/
Elizabeth, a quick and easy way to set up a pen is use horse panels and rebar. Goes up quick and is fairly cheap for what you get in space. The panels are 16' long. Will hold in a chi. Rebar can be driven in with a hammer. Panels can be found at a feed store and rebar at a lumber yard. Most lumber yards can cut the rebar to what every size (height) you need. You just make a gate and got it made. If you need more info let me know.

Do you think we can get try and get local people with computers to set up a place and try to help local people find their pets who have no computer access.? What does anyone think.
Also let's get a a group of us to call radio stations all across the country and also to post in the different states on craigslist etc to announce the 800 number for people looking for pets and let them know about the stealth volunteers looking for owners. Please e-mail me at mailto:laffalot5@juno-dot-com (@juno.com) so we can divide the work. Let's also send a petition or call HSUS and ASPCA and ask for them to get word out and pay for some ads. Also what is the 800 number that was put in the newspaper.
Please also e-mail me if you want to help with other projects to help these and other LA animals. One idea is to bombard the local papers etc, including the Times Picayne who have puppies for sale ads and ask them to remove it and only allow pets for adoption. Haven't they seen enough suffering of the unwanted animals. Craigslist did it and so did E-bay.
No more ads allowed for selling animals. Can someone help me write a petition? And then we need to flood these places with calls, faxes and e-mails. We must cut off more ads for dogs etc to be sold back to the LA people who shouldn't have pets in the first place. And then later continue in other states to do this and also to pressure search engines that allow ads for the millions of animals for sale. There is going to be a repeat scenario next disaster in the gulf where people will just buy more pets, abandom and breed them and then the stray animals will suffer again. This must be stopped now. Half of Louisiana's animals have perished and now it is going to start all over with more unwanted animals. Enough is enough. It is also so insidious that every day I get the pictures of animals on death row in shelters and then I get the posts for all these special breeds for sale. Sale of animals must stop to all the animals get a home. We need every human being who cares about animals to call, fax, etc and take action to contact people selling animals and cut off puppy mills and pet stores that sell.
Also I am working on getting a copy of pit bull fights and making dvd copies. I want to create a packet with some disturbing pictures, information etc and get them into the hands of all the government officials in Louisiana. If they see the gore, the horror and the reality of the fighting and get public outrage maybe someone will once and for all , make it illegal and try to stop this fighting and also do someting about the overwhelming stray population and have mandatory spay and neuter of their animals. This is ridiculous. If anyone can help me on any of thiese projects and future ones please e-mail me. I cannot do this alone. We need to unite. Enough is enough. As caring individuals we are making a difference. If we coordinate our efforts it will be more effective. We need some billionaires to help in LA. and in everystate.
Thanks -marilyn-nyc
Stealth Volunteers place ads for found pets in this weekend's NOLA paper
Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2005 13:50:58 -0000 From: "Robin Siegel" <pennyroyalnorwich @yahoo .com> Subject: Stealth Volunteers place ads for found pets in this weekend's NOLA paper Forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Katrina-Pet-Rescue-info/
Hundreds of Stealth Volunteers contributed to a giant classified ad for hundreds of displaced Katrina pets looking for their owners. The ad will appear in the Friday and Saturday edition of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, December 30-31.
Stealth Volunteers, made up of lawyers, vets, librarians, social workers, dog groomers, moms, and all kinds of pet-lovers, motivated simply by their love of animals and compassion for victims of the storm who lost their beloved pets, has been working tirelessly for four months, reuniting the victims with their pets. At their own expense, the band of loosely-connected detectives placed this ad and obtained an 800 number to take calls.

- Office of Animal Health Services
- Dr. Maxwell A. Lea, Jr., State Veterinarian
