Should Outreach To
Please list groups/people/sites that we should reach out to with PeopleFinder announcements format: URL / Group Name / Contact Info / Your Name
- example: www.civicspacelabs.org / Zack AT civicspacelabs DOT org / Andrew Hoppin
- Get us listed on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9179805/ Contact via e-mail/ M. DeBussy /result unknown
- All the Boards at http://boards.news.yahoo.com/boards/
- From LIZA SABATER, liza -at- culturekitchen DOTCOM:
- I have a growing list of the top 100 liberal, progressive and feminist bloggers in the US. I need :
- Help checking my list for those missing from the Top 100 (as per the NDI's report http://www.culturekitchen.com/archives/003270.html)
- Help compiling the list for CONSERVATIVE BLOGGERS. Please go to http://www.culturekitchen.com/archives/003270.html so you can download the report and get the emails together.
- If you have email lists for top bloggers (ie, Technorati 100 or Feedster 500), then we can build a database of the major players of the blogosphere.
- Make contact with City Cares / Hands On Network for pre-screened volunteers who can work on ad hoc projects such as KPFP. http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/ They may need a little orientation about the concept of online volunteering, but this is a very good potential match. Today I spoke to Lisa Flick (LFlick@HandsonNetwork.org), who is the Hands On Network's national director of network development. She is very enthusiastic about sending out word of volunteering opportunities with KPFP to all of their chapters, but has requested clearer instructions for volunteers, and will hold off until we get them to her. I'm staying in touch with Sue Cline about that. - Deborah Elizabeth Finn
- Make contact with Community Technology Center Network. http://www.ctcnet.org Kavita Singh (ksingh@ctcnet.org)is the executive director. They coordinate a network of centers that focus on public access and training in using computers. These are places where clusters of volunteers can gather to input records. These are also places where evacuees (and people looking for them) can walk in and get online to contact loved ones. I have an email to Kavita Singh, and received a very positive response. - Deborah Elizabeth Finn
- Make contact with the National Association of Social Workers. http://www.naswdc.org/ This is the professional association for many who serve as first responders in disaster relief. A lot of the more senior social workers are techno-phobic, but a small and growing contingent of newly minted social workers is tech-savvy. Offer to train them. The best intermediary is John McNutt (http://cosw.sc.edu/faculty/mcnuttj.html), professor of social work who specializes in information technology and electronic advocacy.
- Create and update a "Katrina PeopleFinder Project" article for http://www.wikipedia.org
- See http://katrinahelp.info/wiki/index.php/Contacts-Leads for possible overlap or duplication of tasks. Sue Cline should make an adjudication.
- Through a post of mine to the ARNOVA email list (Association for Research on Nonprofit and Voluntary Action), Jeff Elder of United Way <jeff.elder@uwa.unitedway.org>, who is UWA's director of social and economic research, heard about KPFP, and emailed me to say that he had spoken to Rhonda Veugen <rhonda.veugen@uwa.unitedway.org>, who is director of eCommunity at United eWay. He urged me to be in touch with her, so I left her a voicemail message, and hope to speak with her soon. According to Jeff, Rhonda says that "some local Volunteer Centers and UWs that are already doing this work very well." UPDATE: I have since spoken to both Jeff and Rhonda on the phone, and they both say that Tamara Schomber would be the decision-maker on behalf of United Way in this case. At the moment, she's too busy to approach, but I will be in touch with her when things quiet down. - Deborah Elizabeth Finn

Users can enter a name, phone number, e-mail address, city, zip code, or the neighborhood of the person they are looking for. The search platform is located at: http://www.katrinalist.net/
Within 7 days of the storm, more than 85,000 records obtained from forums and other sites were manually entered into the central repository by volunteers. The list continues to grow.
Additional volunteers are needed. Tasks are varied. To find out more, please visit the project website located at: http://katrinahelp.info/wiki/index.php/PeopleFinderVolunteer

The Katrina Relief Projects mailing list is meant to provide a communications mechanism for the vast number of web developers who are creating websites and databases to aid in the relief effort. Goals of the list include: Increasing awareness of projects and their goals, Connecting developers with others working on similar projects to facilitate coordination and avoid duplication of effort, Opening discussion on larger-scale collaboration across the community, including the potential for standardized data models and APIs, This list should be used for discussion of active or planned projects only. To see the collection of prior postings to the list, visit the Katrinarelief-projects Archives.

If you are a volunteer looking to find a project to help...
COMBINES the CNN, Next of Kin Registry and MSNBC missing persons lists and then makes the combined list SEARCHABLE to find missing persons from the Hurricane Katrina disaster. By Wednesday, Sept 7th, the American Red Cross list should be integrated into the combined list as well. IN ADDITION, http://www.WeCareTexas.com offers FREE Auto Dialing Lost Persons' Telephone Numbers until they are found. The second service offered by http://WeCareTexas.com is to extend free use of its automated calling center to people searching for Katrina survivors. The service will continually call a specified number entered by a searcher until that number answers and then the system delivers an automated recorded message advising them to contact friends and family. Interested parties can engage this service through the http://www.WeCareTexas.com website.
