According to The Associated Press, and The News & Observer on Sept. 7, here is a breakdown of some states harboring refugees:
- Alabama: about 5,380 in shelters, 20,000 elsewhere
- Arizona: 576
- Arkansas: at least 60,000
- Colorado: 200 at former Lowry AFB
- Connecticut: about 400 in New Haven
- Florida: 778 in shelters
- Illinois: more than 1,000
- Indiana: about 800
- Kansas: fewer than 1,000
- Kentucky: about 600
- Lousisiana: more than 53,000

- Michigan: more than 250
- Mississippi: more than 17,000
- Missouri: about 1,500
- New Mexico: 40-50 at Albuquerque Convention Center
- North Carolina: A state phone line for financial donations is at (888) 835-9966. More than 1,100 refugees, includes:
- Charlotte shelter(s)
- Raleigh: About 400 in shelter in Raleigh. To offer housing to someone staying in a Wake County shelter, call (919) 212-9595. Donations of goods are being accepted Sept. 7-8 at 220 Swinburne between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Requested items are: toys and children's books, pet food, clothing and gift cards for adults.
- Ohio: at least 470 individuals and 73 families
- Oklahoma: about 1,500
- South Carolina: at least 500 families
- Texas: about 240,000
- Utah: 583 around Salt Lake City
- Virgina: 879 with friends or relatives
- West Virginia: about 350
- Washington, D.C.: about 290
