Online Data Entry Issues
(Recruiting) Volunteers
To-do - general
Anybody have any objections to splitting this into separate pages? anything that definitely must be on the main page? Jblake 20:47, 10 Sep 2005 (EDT)
I think that's a great idea, myself. It waaaay needs better organization, and yes, splitting it into two pages is the right thing; drove me nuts finding/figuring out things, wish I'd kept notes, beyond the below -- which is stale now, but should give a sense of a better set of directions:
The main page is a bit confusing btw -- it's hard to figure out how to get into the team to test the data input form -- all the links point to the data entry form, not the instructions on how to sign up and what needs testing. Should be something like: 1) send email to shelterfinder at gmail dot com 2) wait for response, 3) go to http://katrinahelp.info/wiki/index.php/Shelter_Data_Test_Plan read the page and look at http://katrinahelp.info/wiki/index.php/Test_report_and_data 3) and here's the data entry form to test from.
The wiki is serving as:
- project documentation & volunteer direction
- project coordination & assignment
- development and organization discussion
IMO, the main page should be have the documentation & instructions to first-time volunteers
- discussion re the page itself should be on the Discussion page;
- development and organization discussion should be on an email list
(chronological -- at the moment, it's not clear what bits of discussion on the wiki is stale & what's still relevant)
- development documentation should have its own set of pages
- coordination and assignment should either have their own page, or
a real project management page, but so far I haven't heard back from Terry, who offered to set one up. (From what Anand said, Terry didn't email shelterfinder at gmail dot com, no one emailed Terry, and he's dropped out of sight.) Watercat 23:40, 10 Sep 2005 (EDT)
- I've already done a lot of cleanup, including putting the shelterfinder email and volunteer instructions first on the main page. Generally, I'm using the PeopleFinder project pages as a guide. I don't have enough info to update much else. Here are some things which seem most important to clarify:
- the PeopleFinder blue box has the registration form http://wasielewski.org/katrinapeoplefinder/volunteer - is that correct?
- It looks like chunks are getting assigned, you can't claim chunks yourself. correct?
- Where is the main chunks / assignments list? Do people enter agencies directly when trawling?

How-tos for this page
Checking for new messages
To see if new messages have appeared, click on "History" at the top of this page. You can compare any two versions of the page; the changes will be highlighted in red.
Adding messages
Click on "Edit" at the top of this page to add text. Please sign/timestamp your messages by typing ~~~~ at the end.
Starting a new topic
To introduce a new topic, start a section. You can do that by typing ==(Section Title)== on a line by itself. It will appear in the table of contents automatically. Or, you could start a subsection by typing === instead of ==, a sub-subsection with ====, and a sub-sub-subsection with =====. It is better to start new topics at the top of the page, so that people can see them right away.
Replying to messages
If you are replying to somebody else's message, type a colon at the beginning of the line and you'll get a tab. E.g.:

moved agency list sources here
Seemed to be outdated and confusing along side link to main list: Jblake 12:23, 11 Sep 2005 (EDT)
list based on:
- existing list of agencies housing refugees (http://katrina.internet2.edu/wiki/index.php/Aid_Agencies#Relief_Services_in_Areas_Hosting_Refugees) and other sources.
- We already have basic Red Cross data from a few days ago for some of Texas (http://www.dosima.org/katrina/index.php?action=search&state=Texas) and all of Mississippi (http://www.dosima.org/katrina/index.php?action=search&state=Mississippi).
- listing of [380-odd sites (http://www.dosima.org/katrina/index.php?action=search&organisation=%5Bunknown%5D)] at KatrinaSafe.com - may overlap our data - Anand 20:42, 8 Sep 2005 (EDT)
post an update on crossover with Peoplefinder?
Not sure where the excel spreadsheet template to shelter workers landed, and dearly hope someone smarter than me got the template i attempted to provide yesterday. In working out how to set that up the following interaction with Peoplefinder data came up that i wanted to make sure got out there for consideration.
Anand and I had discussed how to relate the PFIF records shelter workers submit to the shelter finder database and propose that the protocol be to use the source fields online volunteers have been using to input site data for shelter data – such as: Source Name: Name of shelter Source Date: Date of record creation Source URL: link to Shelter record in ShelterFinder database
Hopefully this way when source fields are searchable people can see whether the info came from a web site or shelter they can contact.
Hopefully this is what others are expecting /think is right as well. Should this be ammended on this page of the WIKI? If so please do -I can't seem to establish any sort of communication with anyone and i am not sure what is going on so I don't want to muddy the waters by taking the initiative to do so from waayy out in left field. Database for evacuee needs
I'm not sure where's a good place to post this. But I made a rough database the could be useful for individual shelters, to coordinate goods and services needed by individual refugees. If anyone is interested, you can contact me at my [Wikipedia talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Maurreen)]. Maurreen 04:52, 22 Sep 2005 (EDT)
